Covid-19Ro. The Romanian Government has approved an extension of the state of alert by 30 days, starting tomorrow, when additional anti-Covid protection measures also come into force. The most important measure is that wearing a protective mask will again be mandatory both indoors and outdoors. In addition, textile or plastic masks are no longer allowed, only surgical and FFP2 masks, which ensure a higher degree of protection. Meanwhile, in Romania, the number of Covid-19 cases has more than quadrupled since a week ago. Authorities have today reported  5,922 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection and 31 deaths in 24 hours. On the other hand, almost 8 million people have been fully vaccinated in Romania, which is a little over 40% of the eligible population.

NATO. The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, is attending today the extraordinary meeting of the NATO heads of diplomacy, held via videoconference. The debates focus on the security situation in the Eastern Neighborhood and the Black Sea generated by the massive deployment of Russian troops in the vicinity of Ukraine and the implications for Euro-Atlantic stability as a whole. According to the MFA, Minister Aurescu will emphasize, among other things, the need to continue efforts to strengthen the Allied position of deterrence and defense on the entire Eastern Flank, in particular in the Black Sea region. At the same time, he will reiterate Bucharest's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders. The ministerial meeting was convened by the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan's President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has stated today that constitutional order has been largely restored in the country after several days of unprecedented protests. In a separate statement, the Kazakh Interior Ministry has announced that 26 "armed criminals have been liquidated" and more than 3,000 have been arrested. According to the Ministry, 18 policemen and members of the National Guard were killed in the protests. However, the international press notes that the internet and mobile telephony are disrupted in Kazakhstan, so the figures are difficult to verify. The largest country in Central Asia is shaken by protests that broke out on Sunday in the west of the territory, because of the increase in the price of liquefied gas, and spread to the economic capital Almaty, where the demonstrations turned into a riot against the Power, and protesters stormed official buildings. At the request of the Kazakh government, Moscow sent troops. The United States has warned against any violation of human rights. The European Union is also concerned about the recent developments in Kazakhstan. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest, the approximately 100 Romanians in Kazakhstan are safe.

Djokovic. The Australian Interior Minister Karen Andrews said that Novak Djokovic was not being held captive and could leave the country whenever he wanted, while the famous Serbian tennis player spent the night in a Melbourne immigrant detention hotel and his lawyers were fighting against his deportation. The player's father, Srdjan Djokovic, has accused the Canberra government of imprisoning his son and wanting to humiliate him, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic says the player is the victim of political persecution. Novak Djokovic, winner of the Australian Open, was detained at the airport in Melbourne after arriving in Australia on Wednesday, on grounds that there were issues with his entry visa. The tennis player had received a vaccination exemption against Covid-19 from the tournament organizers to compete in the event scheduled for January 17, but this was not enough for the border officials, who cancelled his visa saying that Djokovic failed to  provide appropriate evidence to meet entry requirements into Australia'. Novak Djokovic is awaiting a court ruling on whether he can stay in Australia after his team of lawyers challenged his visa cancellation.

Celebration. Some 2 million Romanians are celebrating their name day today, which is the Saint John the Baptist feast day in the Orthodox Calendar. St. John is considered the most important prophet, the one who makes the connection between the Old and New Testaments. He prophesied the coming to earth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, baptized Him, and revealed Him to the world as the Messiah. This day marks the end of the winter holidays.

Tennis. Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has qualified for the semifinals of the Melbourne Summer Set 1 tournament, with almost 240 thousand American dollars in prize money. She defeated the Swiss Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Simona Halep (aged 30, 20 WTA) will face in the penultimate act the Chinese Qinwen Zheng (19 years old, 126 WTA). Another Romanian - Irina Begu - was, instead, defeated by the American Amanda Anisimova (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) in the quarterfinals of the Melbourne Summer Set 2 tournament. However, Irina Begu is qualified for the doubles semifinals, together with the Serbian Nina Stojanovic. On Saturday, the two will take on the second-seeded pair made up of  Bernarda Pera (USA) / Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic). (MI)

CORONAVIRUS – In Bucharest, the head of the Department for Emergencies, Raed Arafat, announced after a meeting of the National Committee for Emergencies on Friday that the quarantine periods would be reduced as of Saturday. A 5-day quarantine will be required for vaccinated people or people who had the disease in the last 180 days and a 10-day quarantine period for all other persons. The same rules will apply to direct contacts of people who test positive to the virus. The state of alert has been extended by the Government by another 30 days starting on Saturday and the use of textile or plastic masks is no longer permitted due to their very low efficiency. Only surgical or FFP2 masks are allowed. Almost 6 thousand new cases of Covid-19 were announced on Friday and 31 related deaths in 24 hours. Almost 8 million people have been fully vaccinated in Romania.

KAZAKSTAN – Western countries and organisations have called for an end to the violence in Kazakhstan, after the country’s president said he ordered security forces to "fire without warning", amid a violent crackdown on anti-government protests. The North Atlantic Alliance is worried about the developments in the former Soviet state, said Javier Colomina, NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia. NATO called for restraint and calm and asked the authorities to respect the citizens’ right to peaceful protests. The German Government said that violence can never be an appropriate response and shooting civilians is not an option.  The largest country in Central Asia is shaken by protests that broke out on Sunday in the west of the territory, because of the increase in the price of liquefied gas, and spread to the economic capital Almaty, where the demonstrations turned into a riot against the Power, and protesters stormed official buildings. At the request of the Kazakh government, Moscow, Belarus and Armenia sent troops while China voiced its support for the authorities.

Covid-19Ro. The National Committee for Emergency Situations adopted today the decision on the proposal to extend the state of alert and measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal stipulates the obligation to wear only a surgical or FFP2 protective mask , which must cover the mouth and the nose, in all public spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Children under the age of 5, people who are alone in the office, TV presenters and their guests, representatives of religious denominations during masses, speakers in closed or open spaces will be exempted from this measure, provided that the distance of 3 meters between people is observed. Nearly 5,000 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been reported in the past 24 hours, as well as 30 related deaths, 6 from the previous reporting period, the Strategic Communication Group has announced today. Nearly 8 million people have been fully vaccinated, which is a little over 40% of the eligible population.

Pandemic.
The fifth wave of the
pandemic caused by the Omicron is getting bigger, with new case records
worldwide. After the United States, which reported more than a million cases,
significant increases were also reported in Europe. France is approaching
300,000 infections a day, and authorities are announcing tough restrictions on the
unvaccinated people, who will be virtually unable to go anywhere as of January
15th. In the UK, labor market problems, already pre-existing due to Brexit, are
being exacerbated by the pandemic. Key sectors are affected, and the government
has even called on retired teachers to return temporarily to the system after
the UK exceeded 200,000 infections. Cases have also multiplied in Italy and
Greece. According to an Israeli study, a fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine
increases the total number of antibodies five times a week after the inoculation.
 Israel is already administering the
fourth dose of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine to people over 60, health care workers
and immunocompromised patients.

Government.
The Romanian
Government gathers today to discuss the implementation of the National Recovery
and Resilience Plan. The members of the executive will also be informed on the
degree of absorption of cohesion funds related to the multiannual financial
frameworks 2014 - 2020, and 2021-2027. Also, the appendix to Government
Decision of 2008 on the list of international names corresponding to medicines
covered by insured persons with or without a personal contribution on the basis
of a prescription in the social health insurance system or granted under
national health programs will be amended. The cabinet will also approve a series
of decisions, including the one on medicines for the insured or the one related
to the agreement concluded by the governments of Romania and the Republic of
Moldova, which regulates the construction of aqueducts.

EU
diplomacy. The head of European
diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has arrived in Ukraine today to show EU support for
the Kiev authorities, at a time of maximum tension with neighboring Russia,
AFP reports. For several weeks now, Moscow has been accused of deploying troops
at Ukraine's eastern border for a potential offensive. Russia has denied any
wrongdoing and denounced NATO's provocations.  Accompanied by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister
Dmitro Kuleba, Josep Borrell will first travel to the east of the country, on
the 'line of contact' with the pro-Russian separatists with whom Kiev has been
at war since 2014. This conflict, which broke out after the annexation of the
Crimean Peninsula by Russia, has killed more than 13,000 people. Josep Borrell
will then go to Kiev. This is the first visit by a head of European diplomacy
to the front line since the start of the war in eastern Ukraine. Diplomatic
efforts to defuse the Ukrainian crisis have intensified in recent weeks,
especially through a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir
Putin and US President Joe Biden in late December. Russia and the United States
have scheduled talks on Ukraine for January 9 and 10 in Geneva, followed by a
NATO-Russia meeting on January 12 and an OSCE meeting on January 13.

Tennis.
Romanian Simona Halep
(20 WTA) has defeated, today, the Australian Destanee Aiava (316 WTA) at the Melbourne
Summer Set 1 tournament. In the second round she will take on the Romanian Gabriela Ruse, who got an easy victory, on Tuesday, 6-3, 6-2 against the local
player Arina Rodionova (152 WTA). Also today, the Romanian Irina Begu and the Serbian Nina Stojanovic have qualified for the quarters of Melbourne Set 2 - WTA 250, where they will play against the pair made up of Aliona Bolsova (Spain) and Katarzyna Kawa (Poland). The
two preparatory tournaments are taking place ahead of the Australian Open
(January 17-30). (MI)

CORONAVIRUS -  The National Committee for Emergency Situations passed on Wednesday the decision on the proposal to extend the state of alert and measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal stipulates the obligation to wear only a surgical or FFP2 protective mask, which must cover the mouth and the nose, in all public spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Children under the age of 5, people who are alone in the office, TV presenters and their guests, representatives of religious denominations during masses, speakers in closed or open spaces will be exempted from this measure, provided that the distance of 3 meters between people is observed. Some 4,893 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been reported in the past 24 hours, as well as 30 related deaths, 6 from an earlier date. Nearly 8 million people have been fully vaccinated, which is a little over 40% of the eligible population.

PANDEMIC - The fifth wave of the pandemic caused by the Omicron is getting bigger, with new case records worldwide. After the United States, which reported more than 1 million cases, significant increases were also reported in Europe. France is approaching 300,000 infections a day, and authorities are announcing tough restrictions on the unvaccinated people, who will be virtually unable to go anywhere as of January 15th. FUNDS – The Romanian Government’s spokesman, Dan Carbunaru, said that the possibility of having a number of objectives included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) fulfilled in advance was discussed at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. He also said that 18 of the 21 targets in the NRRP had been reached by the end of 2021. According to Carbunaru, there are, at present, three sectors that depend on the answer of European institutions as regards their financing, but that commitments have been complied with by Romania. The country has already received 1.9 billion euros worth of grants out of more than 29 billion euros that Brussels earmarked for Romania. Another 1.9 billion are to be disbursed in the upcoming days.

EDUCATION - The Romanian students’ associations have announced they will protest in front of the Education Ministry in Bucharest on Thursday and will challenge in Court the Minister’s order that leaves 730,000 of them without scholarships. The National Students’ Council have condemned the measure by which the education ministry decided to deprive tens of thousands of children of their right to education. The threshold for a merit scholarship was raised from 8.5 to 9.5, a criterion that students see as ineffective and unfair. Students also want the new criterion to be enforced only starting next year. In his turn, Education Minister Sorin Cimpeanu has recently said that during the classes held online due to the pandemic, grades were distorted so that 50% of Romania’s students could have received merit scholarships.

HANDBALL - Romania's men's national handball team is training for the preliminary qualifying tournament of the World Championship, on home turf in Cluj-Napoca (northwest). Between January 7-9, 2022, the Romanians will take on the national teams of Israel, Cyprus and the Republic of Moldova. Last week, Romania played, also in Cluj, two training matches with the Turkish national team, and won both of them. The friendly matches replaced in the program of the two teams a new edition of the traditional Carpathian Trophy, which was canceled, as several members of the Swiss and Iranian teams tested positive for Covid-19.  The coach of the Romanian team is the famous Spanish Xavi Pasqual, who won the Champions League with Barcelona three times.
