North Dakota bill that would impact the App Store fails in the Senate

As reported by CNET, the bill in North Dakota that would have caused major shifts for Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store has failed. According to the report, bill SB 2333 was voted down by North Dakota's state Senate with a final vote tally of 11 to 36.
The bill, which was supported quite publicly by Epic Games (who is already suing Apple for its App Store practices), would have stopped Apple and Google from requiring developers to use their respective app stores and payment systems. The lobbyist who authored a draft of the bill was reportedly hired by Epic Games.

Coalition for App Fairness behind North Dakota bill against Apple


The Coalition for App Fairness is reportedly behind legislation being introduced in North Dakota which aims to challenge Apple and Google's unyielding control over mobile app revenue.
Founded in September last year after Epic Games entered a bitter legal battle with Apple over its 30% revenue share model for the products on the App Store, the Coalition for App Fairness now boasts over 50 companies, including Spotify and Tinder.
Epic's messy and controversial campaign against Apple -- which at points has been branded "irresponsible corporate propaganda" -- has steadily escalated as the trial date of May 3, 2021 approaches.
Despite Epic's instrumental role in founding Coalition for App Fairness, and it's very public spat with Apple, CEO Tim Sweeney distanced himself from the legislative push, suggesting Epic is only involved through its association with the coalition.

A North Dakota bill that would have drastically altered the way app store operators like Apple and Google manage their digital marketplaces has failed to garner enough votes, failing in the state senate by an 11-36 vote on Tuesday, according to North Dakota House of Representatives member Karla Rose Hanson.
The bill, SB 2333, stirred considerable controversy last week when a committee hearing drew the attention of corporate lawyers and lobbyists, experts, and Apple critics arguing both in favor and against the proposed legislation’s potentially far-reaching consequences.
