Asked by one reporter if she would apologise, she said she regretted that Article 16 was in a "provisional version" of the decision, but said the EU executive had been "quick on its feet" to find another solution.
Dacian Ciolos, president of the liberal Renew Europe group, said mistakes could have grave consequences.
He added: “We have no margin for error in this process. Not only does the credibility of the EU and in particular the European Commission depend on it but also the health and wellbeing of our citizens."

Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz did not hold back, pinning the blame for the problems the bloc has experienced with procuring sufficient doses of COVID-19 jabs squarely on the shoulders of the former German Defence Minister. Mr Scholz, who is the deputy leader of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) services in the coalition government led by Chancellor Mrs Merkel, offered an angry assessment of both the Commission and Mrs von der Leyen during a cabinet meeting on Monday, German newspaper Bild claimed.

However, given there is still no certainty over who will be replacing the 64-year-old later this year, the future remains uncertain - with experts highlighting the issue of relations with the two superpowers as an enormous challenge for a post-Merkel German government. Mrs Merkel, who has been Germany’s leader since 2005, last year announced her decision to step down in 2021.

Hans-Olaf Henkel said Brussels was paying the price for its dogmatic insistence on rolling out the vaccine across Europe in a uniform fashion, a decision he suggested had undoubtedly cost lives. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her colleagues on Friday sought to trigger Article 15 of the Northern Ireland protocol as a result of its row with AstraZeneca over shortfalls in COVID-19 jabs, in a move described by Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster as “an incredible act of hostility”.

Hans-Olaf Henkel, who stepped down from the European Parliament in 2019, lamented the narrow defeat in Saturday’s CDU leadership contest of Friedrich Merz, describing him as the only senior German figure who understands what a colossal loss Brexit represents to the EU. Mr Laschet, Prime Minister of the North Rhine Westphalia region, defeated Mr Merz, a former member of the Bundestag who has since forged a successful business career, in the second round of voting by 521 votes to 466 in a ballot of 1,001 CDU delegates, with Norbert Roettgen having been knocked out after the first ballot.

Germany’s Chancellor last year announced her plan to step down from the position she has occupied since 2005. However, former German MEP Hans-Olaf Henkel suggested it was far from impossible that she could reverse her decision, especially in the wake of Armin Laschet’s narrow victory over Friedrich Merz which saw him crowned the leader of her Christian Democrat Union Party.

Mr Merz yesterday narrowly lost out to Armin Laschet in the CDU leadership contest, putting the latter in pole position to replace Mrs Merkel as Chancellor when she steps down later this year. Hans-Olaf Henkel, who had backed Mr Merz for the top job, accused Mrs Merkel’s supporters of engineering his defeat - while warning the German Chancellor she could not afford to ignore him, but should instead offer him the powerful position of Minister of the Economy.

ANGELA Merkel's probable replacement as Germany's leader - sometimes referred to as ‘mini-Merkel' in recognition of his close ties with the departing Chancellor - is likely to pursue policies which will drive more of the EU27 to consider following the UK out of the bloc, a former MEP has said.
