As the warmer weather approaches, more blues activities are on the horizon. Early gigs are being posted and more are expected. That means Blues Beat will soon have plenty of information on gigs concerts and jam sessions at our Connecticut venues. You can help by alerting us to upcoming dates and other activities — it’s greatly appreciated.
Some of that live music includes Morgan Giosa/Brandt Taylor Blues Band, Saturday at the Hungry Tiger.

Puccini impersonator: To many an opera lover, there is no such thing as too much Puccini. SFR Digital-ish Picks—Week of March 10

Breath Taking
The New Mexico Museum of Art's Curator of Photography Kate Ware was ready to go with the exhibit
Breath Taking last year when the pandemic began. What once was meant to be a celebratory look at breath and breathing suddenly became a lot more complicated. If breathing can kill us—which, as we've learned with COVID-19, it can—how does a curator rework a show about breath and breathing, and make it a bit more current?
"[The pandemic] gave us the opportunity to reevaluate," Ware says. "Instead of breath being a good thing that keeps you alive, it becomes threatening; and because we also looked at the renewed call for racial equity, I think it's a much stronger show."

Crossroads' Best Releases Of 2020

Dec 14, 2020
Despite a global pandemic, there continued to be a steady stream of global sounds throughout 2020. And if we couldn’t travel literally, perhaps more of us will be inclined to do so musically and discover some of the great work that musicians from all around the world have to offer.
This year you could travel the Silk Road from one end — with the Chinese band Manhu and Mongolian ensemble Khusugtun — to the other — with Turkish oud player Mehmet Polat — or explore the whole route with 3,14 (whose 2020 release takes its title from the scientific name for the silk worm.)
It’s hard to resist almost any Afrobeat, and there were quite a number of choices this year, but especially so if you go to the source (Nigeria’s Bantu) or one of its more unlikely outposts (Lithuania’s Ojibo Afrobeat).
