Coronavirus: 13 Experts Gave Us Their 2021 Predictions

Coronavirus: 13 Experts Gave Us Their 2021 Predictions
In order to shed more light on what to expect in the coming months, the
National Interest reached out to more than a dozen medical experts across the United States to get their personal opinions. Here is what they had to say.
As each month passes amid this ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the daily number of infections has continued to march in one direction only—steadily upward.
In the latest rolling seven-day period, the United States is averaging about 215,000 new cases per day, according to data compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last Saturday, a grim new record was set when nearly 300,000 new cases were reported, and the cumulative death toll surpassed more than 350,000 on the same day.

NY begins testing for new strain of coronavirus

The state-run Wadsworth Laboratory in Albany has looked at more than 3,700 coronavirus sequences identified in New York, but has yet to find the U.K. variant present in any of the samples, according to a statement released by the governor's office.
Further, Wadsworth and the Department of Health have forged agreements with six hospitals statewide, including University of Rochester Medical Center, to obtain additional samples and is continuing to make arrangements with other hospitals to do the same.
Other downstate hospital systems currently participating included Bronx-based Montefiore, Northwell Health's location on Long Island, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Albany Medical Center and Saratoga Hospital, the statement noted.

NY begins testing for new strain of coronavirus spreading in U.K.

New York State Team
Hospitals and labs are conducting tests to determine if a new strain, or variant, of coronavirus currently spreading across the United Kingdom has arrived in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.
So far, about 4,000 tests in New York have returned zero positives for the new strain, which health officials in the U.K. said is much more infectious than earlier versions that have killed more than 317,000 Americans, Cuomo said.
The effort to test for the new strain in New York comes after three airlines on Monday agreed to require negative COVID-19 test results of all travelers boarding flights from the U.K. to New York state airports.

COVID-19: UK reports new strain. What to know about testing, vaccines.

British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the infection was “out of control” in Southern England.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who described the new variant as 70% more transmissible than the original, ordered tighter restrictions and dropped a much-anticipated relaxation of rules that had been set to kick in across much of England ahead of the holidays. More than 16 million people are now ordered to stay at home in London and southeast England, and socializing elsewhere in the country is now restricted to Christmas Day only.
Kulkarni said modeling data found a recent steep rise in COVID-19 cases in the U.K. from this new variant, which could suggest it's more transmissible. However, an increase in human interaction could have also contributed to rising cases.

It’s agony enough to experience Covid-19 with its chills, fever, and other unpleasant symptoms. Now experts are discovering that some people who have recovered from coronavirus have lingering effects that last for weeks or even months.

Scott Krakower, DO, a psychiatrist in Glen Oaks, New York, is a case in point. The 40-year-old spent much of April sick with a violent cough, trouble swallowing, and chills so extreme he kept taking hot showers. He tested negative for the virus at the end of May. It’s now early August and, while the virus itself may be gone, he still has a recurring cough, fatigue, and weakness in his voice. He doesn’t plan to return to work until September at the earliest. (This is how you can avoid coronavirus at work.)
