Support of 23 UML lawmakers to NC President Deuba still intact: Senior leader Nepal
My Republica
KATHMANDU, July 12 -- The rival faction leader within the ruling CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that the support of 23 UML lawmakers given earlier to Nepali Congress(NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba in his prime ministerial bid is still intact.
Senior leader Nepal made the remarks while expressing serious dissatisfaction over the claims made by a section of leaders close to Prime Minister K P Oli that the writ petition filed earlier by NC President Deuba was now invalid with 23 UML lawmakers withdrawing their signatures. Nepal has said that 23 lawmakers who extended their signatures earlier to President Deuba have not withdrawn their signatures even as the Task Force has finalized a 10-point agreement to settle intra-party disputes in the UML.

KATHMANDU: Nepal's Election Commission has advised the government led by embattled Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli to conduct the mid-term elections slated for November 12 and 19 in a single phase to prevent the further spread of coronavirus infections during electioneering.
After a meeting with Prime Minister K P Oli on Saturday, Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya said it is Election Commission's constitutional duty to successfully conduct polls once the date has been announced.

Resisting the rightward drift

Resisting the rightward drift
My Republica
Nepal, March 4 -- State's rightward shift poses a risk of pushing us into the abyss of status-quo and, more worryingly, regression.
On February 20, Republica published an article under the topic "Contesting Nepal's majoritarian interests" written by Pranab Kharel. The article succinctly observed Nepal's socio-political dynamics and argued that the permeating majoritarian mindset sees "any change to the existing political and cultural structure (as) a threat to the unity of the country". The subject of this statement can best be understood as the pleadings of identity politics permeating our socio-political-legal realm which is receiving little or no sympathy from the incumbent political rulers, especially Prime Minister K P Oli, the ideologically-alike culturally dominant group, the bureaucracy, and the Nepal Army, what Kharel collectively terms as "majoritarian mindset".

New Delhi, Dec 30: Even as China makes attempts to bring the warring factions in Nepal together, there are plans afloat to target Prime Minister K P Oli's credentials in case he does not cave.
Nepal Prime Minister K P Oli
So far, the team of the Chinese Communist Party has not been able to any headway, with Oli remaining firm on his decision on the dissolution of Parliament. While China has been criticised for interfering in Nepal's internal affairs, the Chinese Communist Party has maintained that its team is in Kathmandu only to deepen relations between the political parties of the two countries.
