We must guard against the deceptive advocacy of democracy

In the 2020 Democratic Party platform, they write of “restoring and strengthening our democracy.” The contradiction is that the United States is a constitutional republic. The word “democracy” does not appear in either the Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution. Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution states: “The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government.” The Pledge of Allegiance is “to the Republic.”
In “Federalist No. 14,” James Madison referred to the political misconception of the “confounding of a republic with a democracy.” Emphatically, the founders and framers of the nation did not want and hoped forever to prevent the creation of a democracy in America. The merit of our Constitution is that it does not promote democracy but checks it.

Ruling could lead to $1 million home demolished

An administrative law judge has handed down a harsh ruling in what can be described a neighbor dispute on steroids that could result in a $1 million-plus, oceanfront home on Sugarloaf Key being demolished.
The ruling, issued last week, also severely chastised a Monroe County building official for what the hearing judge described as “irregular” and “unacceptable behavior.”
Administrative Law Judge John Van Laningham revoked the building permits and elevation certificates the county granted the home on State Road 4A on Sugarloaf Key, which has already been built and owned by Peter and Emily Giampaoli.
The judge ruled the home was not in compliance with current county building codes and regulations having to do with flood plain management, which were put in place so local property owners can participate in the National Flood Insurance Program, and the county should have not granted the permits and certificates.

Permit issued to reduce height of Confederate flag along I-64 in Louisa County

BY TYLER HAMMEL
The Daily Progress
The owner of a controversial flagpole bearing a Confederate flag in Louisa County has received a permit to reduce the height of the structure, likely ending a years-long legal battle.
The Confederate battle flag has been an issue of contention since it was erected in 2018. Initially called the Charlottesville I-64 Spirit of Defiance Memorial Battle Flag by the Virginia Flaggers, the flagpole was reportedly built in response to Charlottesville City Council votes to remove two statues of Confederate generals.
The 30- by 50-foot flag flies from a 120-foot-tall pole about 15 miles east of Charlottesville. The flagpole, erected on private property, is momentarily visible to motorists traveling east on Interstate 64.
