The new meatless burger is made with a vegan patty supplied by Dutch brand The Vegetarian Butcher which was acquired by consumer goods company Unilever in 2019. The Vegetarian Butcher CEO Hugo Verkuil told Reuters that the brand plans to expand its plant-based patty to 1,300 additional Burger King locations in China in the first quarter of 2021. Shares This month, multinational fast-food chain Burger King added the Plant-Based Whopper to select locations across Japan for a limited time. The new burger is made with a soy-based patty (made by Australian vegan brand v2food) along with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mayonnaise, and is served on a toasted sesame seed bun. “Burger King is proud to announce the launch of the Plant-Based Whopper, a 100 percent plant-based patty with a smoky, savory flavor created by its unique ‘open flame’ method,” a press release announcing the launch states. “Burger King has spent nearly two years developing a burger with a 100 percent plant-based patty.
