Joe in his army days, left IT IS 76 years ago this week that a young Glasgow soldier found himself in one of the Second World War’s most ferocious battles. Joe Quinn, serving in the 51st Division of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was just 20 years old when he took part in Operation Veritable, or the Battle of the Reichswald Forest. It was the northern part of an Allied pincer movement which took place between February 8 and March 11, 1945, in the final stages of the Second World War. His sister, Sally Conway, 83, explains: “Joe spoke of the camaraderie and hardship he experienced during that period. It was a time that would in a way define the rest of his life.
Love letters and photos that Sergeant Peter Fitzpatrick Vane Winkle sent to his sweetheart during the war have now been recovered. Mr Winkle, who grew up in Canonbury, died among five members of a Wellington bomber crew shot out of the sky in Willich. He had been a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserves. ‘I shall always love you’: note sent by Sgt Winkle Mr Heyes has been in contact with Yvonne Young, a woman living in Surrey who says her mother Patsy kept a photo of Sgt Winkle. She said: “He wasn’t the only chap because my mum was also seeing my dad at that time. It was funny for me because my mum never really spoke about the war because she was of that generation that didn’t.”
