Dodgy dealing tale of two cities

The Shoeshine column is the
NBR’s longest-running feature. It was launched during the euphoria leading up to the October 1987 sharemarket crash, which hit New Zealand harder than most.
It was inspired by the legendary story about how, in the late summer of 1929, a shoeshine boy gave stock tips to Joseph Kennedy, a financier and father of John F Kennedy. Being a wise investor, Kennedy thought, “If shoeshine boys are giving stock tips, then it’s time to get out of the market.”
Kennedy made a killing by selling his stocks before Wall Street collapsed in October 1929, eventually leading to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

A Nobel Prize laureate, a Booker Prize winner and one of the world's most celebrated fantasy authors will share the spotlight with dozens of Kiwi authors at this year's Auckland Writers Festival.
After being forced to cancel the 2020 festival due to lockdown, the country's largest literary festival is staging a massive comeback, with around 170 events planned across six days in May.
Marquee events include Nobel Prize for Literature winner Kazuo Ishiguro and activist Ai Weiwei beaming into the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre in one of the many ways the festival has been forced to adapt in the pandemic era.

Learn more about classic fairy tales at the library

Learn more about classic fairy tales at the library
Annie Gilmer, Shreveport Times
For this week’s library column, I thought I’d have fun with random holidays again. So, this week, specifically on February 26, you can celebrate Tell a Fairy Tale Day and I’ve got several suggestions for how you can observe this quirky, unofficial holiday.
But before I get into how to celebrate this holiday, I think I should at least briefly talk about what a fairy tale is. For instance, Merriam-Webster defines a fairy tale as “a story involving fantastic forces and beings (such as fairies, wizards, and goblins)” or as “a story in which improbable events lead to a happy ending.” Many of us grew up watching classic Disney versions of well-loved fairy tales such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, the Little Mermaid, and Cinderella. And again, many of us are familiar with the Grimm’s version of several of those fairy tales as well. But did you know that many of these stories exist in multiple cultures?

The sometimes rocky dynamics of female relationships have given rise to some great thrillers — Jane Harper's Force of Nature, Alafair Burke's The Better Sister or, most recently, our own Rose Carlyle's The Girl in
the Mirror spring to mind. This paean to another toxic pairing by journo and part-time teacher Polly Phillips is as much "chick lit" as thriller.
Pre-publication Phillips posted a countdown of "the greatest toxic friendships of all time" on Twitter that had inspired this entertaining debut. That kicked off with Gossip Girls' Blair and Sabrina and proceeded through Sex and the City's Carrie and Samantha and 90210's Brenda and Kelly. Readers who enjoyed those small-screen frenemy battles will find plenty to celebrate here.

December Mysteries Roundup: Wrap up an unsettling year with page-turning suspense

A popular concept in crime fiction revolves around the discovery that someone thought to be the victim of a serial killer was murdered by someone else.
Mundane? Decidedly not in
“Shed No Tears” (Harper, $26.99, 368 pages), the third entry in Caz Frear’s series featuring Detective Constable Catrina “Cat” Kinsella of the London police.
In 2012, the disappearance of Holly Kemp was thought to be the work of Christopher Masters, who confessed to murdering three previous young women, but vacillated on whether he was responsible for Holly’s death.
Six years later, her remains are found. Unlike the other killings, she was fatally shot, not strangled, and clothed, not naked.
