Consumers Feel Agriculture Can Positively Impact Climate Change

(NAFB) – American consumers feel agriculture can be part of the solution to climate change rather than the problem.
A new Cargill Feed4Thought Survey says those who indicated climate change is important to them also rate livestock and agriculture lowest in negative impact compared to the other industries regarded as significant contributors. Over one-third of the respondents expressed confidence in the industry’s ability to limit its contributions to climate change.
“Farmers are critical to feeding the world sustainably and responsibly,” says Ruth Kimmelshue, chief of Cargill’s animal nutrition and health business. “With a growing population and rising consumer interest in climate change, they are also part of the solution to address some of the toughest environmental challenges.”

How ag businesses deliver on their commitments to sustainability

At the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit, leaders from Land O’Lakes, The Nature Conservancy, Cargill, and General Mills discuss how their business models and partnerships drive sustainability forward.
One resounding message is the need for “radical collaboration” across the industry, to move the needle forward for the farmer and environment.

“The farmer is the original environmentalist,” says Bekele. “Farmers want to do right by the land from one generation to the next, but at the same time, by augmenting their profit and loss, there is further incentive to put soil health practices into place.”

In the far west of Brazil’s Bahia state, sprawling soybean plantations extend from the edges of the highways right up to the horizon. The region is considered Brazil’s new grain frontier, its roads bustling with trucks hauling agrochemicals, cattle, and tons of soybeans. The 2019-2020 harvest was the second best in the history of Bahia: more than 6 million tons of soybeans were produced in the state. That kind of output has attracted major companies such as SLC Agrícola, one of the largest grain producers in Brazil.
