Watching the Clock - Jeweller Magazine: Jewellery News and Trends

Watching the Clock

The hybrid Watches & Wonders trade event – presented digitally in Geneva followed by a physical Shanghai show – has rekindled optimism for the Swiss watch industry, reports MARTIN FOSTER.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic focused the world’s attention on large trade fair gatherings, declaring them off-limits for health and safety reasons. Yet even before this, what those within the watch industry regarded as ‘normal’ was already facing considerable challenge.
As we know, the previous annual cycle of trade fairs – Baselworld, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), Inhorgenta Münich, the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair, et al – was already in disarray, primarily related to uncontained costs.

The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, now restyled as Watches and Wonders, was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus crisis.
This year, with Europe battling a third wave of the pandemic, the fair -- one of the major annual gatherings for luxury watchmakers -- opened online on April 7, closing on Tuesday.

World’s top new watches unveiled
Around this time of year, lifestyle journalists would be regaling watch enthusiasts with tales from Richemont’s ritzy Watches & Wonders trade fair (formerly Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, SIHH) at Geneva’s Palexpo convention center, and the historic Baselworld, where every other watchmaker, from Alpina to Zenith, is hosted and toasted in the Herzog & de Meuron-designed Messe exhibition complex.
But the events of last spring made a different “messe” of all that, of course, which means that, for a second year, we’re reporting on the most extraordinary horological creations launched entirely via Watches & Wonders’ online portal — whipped up in record time last March, and now fully loaded with panel discussions, keynotes, trade resources and a Q&A interface.

The shift online of fairs like Watches and Wonders has affected more than just the watch industry.
For Geneva and Basel, those Swiss cities that traditionally have been hosts of the largest watch fairs as well as other big gatherings like the Geneva International Motor Show and Art Basel, the domino effect from a physical event — or the lack of one — touches a wide range of other businesses, from airlines to the laundry services that wash visitors’ sheets and towels.
