North Cork man awarded Freedom of London for his works for Irish builders in UK

Christmas came early for Boherbue native Seán Daly who has been bestowed with the prestigious Freedom of the City of London at a special ceremony at the city’s Guildhall in recognition of his success as a businessman. The Honorary Freedom is the highest honour the City of London can bestow and is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies still in existence. Paying tribute to individuals for their outstanding contribution to London in business, sport or public life, Seán joins the illustrious ranks of Honorary Freemen, who include Lord Nelson, The Duke of Wellington, David Livingston, William Gladstone, Florence Nightingale, Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II, Terry Wogan, Bob Geldoff and Ed Sheerin, among others. Joined by family and friends to celebrate the occasion, the acknowledgement is one of London’s ancient traditions, with the Freedom first presented in 1237. “It is a big honour, your name is up there with a number of celebrity figures, it was a proud occasion for my family and my company”, said Seán. Now living outside Ardnacrusha in Co. Clare with his wife Maria, Seán commutes back and forth to London weekly. Along with four colleagues, they founded the London Irish Construction Network in 2009. “Initially, I worked seven years at Intel followed by seven years at Analog Devices. In some ways, the move to London might have been described as madness but, thank God, it worked out”, said Seán. The former Boherbue Comprehensive School pupil linked up with Con O’Sullivan from Cullen to start an electrical company in 2003 before the pair, joined by three fellow businessmen, initiated the London Irish Construction Network (TLICN). “All were involved in the construction industry in London, with the objective of creating and encouraging new business for all members within the network. We wanted to create a forum where Irish people working in the construction industry in Britain could share information about contracts and business opportunities”, said Seán. The group also sought to hold an event at the House of Commons which acknowledged the powerful and important contribution of the Irish to the construction sector within Britain. Today the company has approximately 300 builders on its books with a similar number of skilled tradesmen. “As one of the fastest growing construction networks in the UK, TLICN’s objective is to create and encourage new business opportunities for its members”, said Seán. Networking events are an important part of what TLICN does. In the past year, the directors hosted their seventh parliamentary reception in the House of Commons before Ambassador Martin Fraser, the Irish Ambassador to the UK, welcomed the TLICN group to the Irish Embassy where a panel discussion focused on future developments in UK infrastructure. Former soccer international Niall Quinn teamed up with journalist Tadhg Enright for a fireside night of chat and stories, hosted by TLICN. Continuing on a sporting theme, a GAA forum hosted by the BBC’s Sarah Mulkerrins brought together Bernard Brogan (Dublin), Marc Ó Sé (Kerry), Peter Canavan (Tyrone) and Aidan O’Shea (Mayo) was yet another TLICN event in the past year. Another ceremonial task awaits Séan next September where, as Freeman of London, he will exercise the ancient right to drive sheep toll-free across London Bridge into the heart of the UK capital against the backdrop of some of the city’s most famous landmarks, such as the Shard and Tower Bridge. “In medieval times, freemen were allowed to take their sheep into the city and sell them at market without having to pay a toll. It’s a task that I’m looking forward to”, said Seán. The Freedom of London recipient is a frequent visitor to Boherbue, meeting with mum Mary and friends. Local outlets such as Boherbue Comprehensive School and Boherbue GAA can be proud of a past pupil and former player who helped his club reach a Duhallow JAFC Final in 1984 and is now acknowledged with a special milestone on receiving the Freedom of London. “It’s great to come back home on a regular basis, Islandbrack holds special memories, catching up on the news and dwelling back on the past makes Boherbue special”, said Seán.
