So profound was Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s imprint on San Francisco’s city life and culture that it seemed anyone who encountered him came away with a story of finding his aura of graciousness as great as his legend.
Those fond remembrances have been flowing this week with the news of his death at 101.
For decades the City Lights bookstore he co-founded at Columbus Avenue and Broadway has been a must stop for tourists and a must return for locals who wanted to immerse themselves in the ambiance of an independent bookstore where the power and nuance of the written word was both celebrated and nurtured. It was always a bonus when Ferlinghetti was there, as he often was, to enhance the experience. ....

The battle for the internet unfolding in California follows a template familiar to observers of the state’s contest with automakers over air pollution: Interested corporations team up with a reactionary administration to dismantle reasonable federal regulations, California and other states step into the breach, and the companies’ lobbyists end up whining about the piecemeal state regulations they brought on themselves.

UC Berkeley plans to build desperately needed housing for students and formerly homeless residents on the hallowed ground of People’s Park, and some people are upset. Protesters have camped in the park a few blocks from campus and taken down fences put up in preparation for constructing dorms for 1,200 and supportive housing for 150. Longtime residents and activists are wrinkling their noses and worry that a 17-story development is “completely out of scale for the neighborhood.” ....
