expectations a little more vague compared to some of these other presidential candidates, but they fully believe that if they compete in iowa, it'll bring them into new hampshire. if they do really well in new hampshire, they don't have to come in first, they're looking for a strong second place finish, it'll propel them into south carolina. >> shelby, you've got some reporting this week on your discussions with hispanic leaders who are warning of president biden's tough path ahead in courting latino voters. voters he won in the past and needs to win again. give us a sense of your reporting. >> i've talked to hispanic leaders from both sides of the aisle, from progressives to con conservatives. they are concerned about the economy, the number one concern i hear people talk about. they're concerned about the border, and they're just not buying the bidenomics, the positivity that the biden administration is selling them. at the same time, this doesn't mean that all of those voters
are going to immediately go over to vote for trump because there's some dissatisfaction with donald trump, too. the overwhelming sense that i'm getting is there is a large sect of the hispanic vote that feels almost politically homeless right now. that is a danger to joe biden, but it is also potentially not great for donald trump if a number of these voters end up deciding to vote, for example, third party. >> shelby, let's also talk about another demographic where president biden is showing some weakness in his polling, and that's with african-american voters, particularly black men. again, we know trump made some inroads there in 2020, but biden needs them to come home. that's, in part, his audience when he goes to south carolina on monday. give us the latest on the field of play. >> yeah, this is -- i think with all of these groups of voters, whether you're talking about hispanic voters, talking about black voters, young voters, we're seeing a trend here. it's that joe biden is in
democracy. it worked in 2020 and they plan to make it work again in 2024. >> and to that point, shelby, the trump campaign laid out a memo yesterday to try to basically underscore or show us kind of what their argument is going to be. there are a couple things that stood out to me. trump has said some of the stuff on the campaign trail, but they were very ex-pli poliits saying indictments have indictments against hard working americans across the country. so directionly making that link. and of course they also repeated what trump said late last year on the trail trying to argue that it is actually biden that is a threat to democracy in response to what you just outlined. so it seems like that they will try to say that over and over and over again and convince people that it is true. sweec we've seen that strategy work with the republican base. do you think that it will get traction with the independent voters that will ultimately
mind. >> yeah, an interesting way to think about it. shelby, the "washington post" rye p released a poll and this goes to in terms of trump being able to convince republicans of things. republicans are nor likely to absolve trump of his role in january 6 than they were back in 2021. what do you think it says about how both of the campaigns will handle what is next this year? >> i think it indicates the political divide and how difficult temperatures for either side to really bring over the moderate and eventemperaturr side to really bring over the moderate and even those on their side to their side. and the political divide is as strong as we've seen it in modern history. and this poll underscores that. i mean, nearly 7 in 10 republicans thought that trump is innocent of the charges relating to his efforts to
