Dickinson: Season Two Has Fun Taking Poetic License With Its Historical Setting  – SLUG Magazine

If you like period costume dramas, then
Dickinson, which streams on AppleTV+, might be just the show for you—but it’s certainly not the one you’re expecting it to be. This Peabody and GLAAD Media award-winning series, created by
Alena Smith, follows the life and times of the great American poet
Emily Dickinson, as portrayed by
Hailee Steinfeld. While it’s set in the 1850s, it looks at the time through a distinctly modern lens, from deliberately and hilariously anachronistic dialogue and music to progressive sensibilities. In light of Season 2’s finale, three major cast members—

Apple TV Plus launched in November with four main titles. All four were renewed before the launch, a lucky break given their collectively mediocre stories. But in the case of “Dickinson,” it’s Apple that got lucky. The quirky, female-led series was the least promoted of the four, and the only half-hour comedy of the group. But it quickly became the streamer’s most talkedabouthit. “Dickinson’s” second season offers up more of what made it shine in November, delighting audiences with a cheeky spin on the traditional period piece.

(Warning: This post contains mild spoilers for Season 2 of “Dickinson.”)
One of the most fun aspects of “Dickinson” is that the Apple TV+ series mixes the life of 19th century poet Emily Dickinson with 21st century music. Last season featured needle drops from the likes of Lizzo and Billie Eilish, and in a super meta twist, star Hailee Steinfeld even contributed her own original song.
The second season of “Dickinson” premiered today, with the first three episodes immediately available for viewers (new episodes will continue to air weekly until February). And just like Season 1, there’s no shortage of expertly curated contemporary tunes to soundtrack Emily’s adventures.

The Key to Dickinson Season Two Is a Woman Named Lola Montez

The Key to Dickinson Season Two Is a Woman Named Lola Montez

There’s a running joke in season two of
Dickinson, a little returning bit that never amounts to all that much in the grand scheme of things but is a great example of the show’s sincere but Surrealist sense of humor. Emily’s sister, Lavinia (Anna Baryshnikov), who spent much of season one lurking resentfully in Emily’s shadow, steps into her own a bit more. She’s more aware of her sexuality, more interested in defining her life by something other than becoming a younger model of her mother, and she develops a relationship with a young man who rents a room in the Dickinson home, Henry “Ship” Shipley (Pico Alexander). Lavinia likes him, but she becomes especially intrigued by something he mentions offhandedly — that he once had a relationship with a woman named Lola Montez, who was known for doing a particularly compelling spider dance.

Dickinson Season 2 Exclusive: Lavinia Has a Questionable New Suitor

Lavinia spent season 1 longing to conform to the era's expectations of affluent womanhood, but now, she's ready to follow in her older sister's boundary-pushing footsteps. That's complicated by the arrival of Henry "Ship" Shipley (Pico Alexander), a former flame boarding at the Dickinson house. Naturally, he's approaching the arrangement with ulterior motives: making a wife out of "pure, simple, quiet, traditional" Lavinia. She's not having it. ELLE.com has an exclusive clip of Lavinia and Ship from the season 2 premiere, "Fame is a fickle food," which you can watch above.
Of the new season, Steinfeld told ELLE.com last year, "Emily finding her place, her confidence as a writer, as a woman—it's all taken to the next level. Of course, it wouldn't be
