definitely the cavity of the shoreline is something that is very scary for a storm surge, because it is very conducive for the piling up of that water with the onshore flow, anywhere to the right of the center. >> yeah, that is a really interesting point about how that geography can actually make it so much worse for that part of the state. read, tamarack you very much as always and, again, stay safe tonight. >> thank you for having me. >> in some florida hospitals are suspending services ahead of idalia's landfall, but others are preparing for a spike in patients. someone who is manning the war room of one of florida's largest hospital systems will join me next. ♪ chevy silvlverado has what it takes to do it all. with up to 13 camemera views. and the z71 off-road package. ♪ you ok? yeah.

feet under the water tower, the school, people are stashing their vehicles up there. all of this behind me is going to be flooded out for several blocks through the gulf of mexico shoreline. >> you have experienced so many storms over the course of your life and career, but this is not really a part of florida that is used to this kind of intensity. what are you the most concerned about as we go into the coming hours? >> well that's right. a storm of this intensity has never gone up through the major coast and the northwest florida and appalachia bay here, and so an unprecedented storm like this will have unprecedented impacts and we just don't know what to expect. it is a scary thing, even for a storm chaser that has seen over 50 or 60 hurricanes so far, we just don't know what the impacts are going to be. we're not as familiar with the shoreline, it is very low-lying here as well so the storm surge is going to penetrate several miles inland. it is likely going to knock out a lot of bridges as well.

on up to the big ben area, that is when the surge will be from crystal city, possibly in two appalachia cola. where most of the surge will likely be. this is what we are talking about. the very flat piece of land. why does that matter? when the water goes up a foot, literally your shoreline can lose 3 to 400 feet. and if it goes defeat, all the sudden you have lost 1000 feet. if it goes up what they're forecasting, 10 to 15 feet. oh my gosh, how far inland will that go? that will likely be miles. likely miles inland that this will push the water. this is an area, very fragile, it's wildlife, they will have to try to get out of the. people have to get out of the way. this surge is a very dangerous thing. >> seeing it visually in front of us is something that is so stunning. chad myers, thank you so much. and thank you everyone for watching. don't go anywhere.

have got a full moon which happens to be a super moon which means the moon is closer to earth, bigger tides. the deck was kind of stacked before this even came up the shoreline. here is the storm surge. we knew it was going to happen. as soon as the winds shifted, it's bringing stuff with it off the beach. they've shut the road off right here all the way up the line around the bend about a half mile up because water is -- it looks to me about a foot and a half or two feet deep right that the bend. it's all storm surge flooding, not rain flooding. that's saltwater. they blocked off the road here. they don't want anyone driving on it obviously. look at the foam that's left up. it took everything and is pushing it through. i've been looking at the beach junk.

storm surge 4 to 6 feet within the tampa bay region. we're on bay shore drive, very kind of dramatic scene unfolding behind us. now, this would normally be a major artery through tampa bay and the apartments and buildings just to our south. but what you are seeing is a completely deserted roadway. this is a road i'm standing on and look at the waves crashing over the shoreline there. this is quite a scene. this is storm surge, 4 to 6 feet. and just because we were or are 150 miles away from the center of the strongest part of idalia doesn't mean that we are not going to have the impacts. and it is not just along the immediate coast. any local native to tampa bay understands that bay shore drive floods when it rains. it happens. however, this is a different kind of water. this is all storm surge, a push from the ocean, and that push has made its way up city blocks as well. so we'll pan a little bit this
