in california, our storm is moving onshore the area of greatest concern are the same spots we had horrific flooding a couple of days ago. l.a. is expecting to get three inches of rain, which is a lot of rain. if you are been in los angeles when it rains, they freak out over a quarter inch, three is a ton. they are going to have a lot of water problems later tonight the snow melt and the rain outside of fresno, and then, of course, down around santa barbara to los angeles katy, do you remember, just a couple days ago, we had all the stories about the people in the mountains outside l.a. that were stranded that was near the lake arrowheld area they are getting possibility of five inches of rain. so, imagine, we showed you the pictures, right, everyone was trapped, the heavy, huge snow banks, plus five inches of rain tonight and the snow melt? we're going to have really serious problems with runoff in areas just outside of l.a. later on tonight >> bill, i am from los angeles and school would routinely get

to maybe moderate coastal flooding then to the west, still 17 million people are exaimpacted this we've got so much snow at the high elevations. so much rain coming. it's amazing if you look at the reservoirs some of them were like 36% full before this winter, and now they're up to like 85% full. we've made up for like years of drought in california. another 3 to 7 inches of rain is likely with these next storm this comes in late tonight it will be with us as we go throughout the day tomorrow. and yes, jose, another 4 to 8 inches of snow in the higher elevation. i don't know where they're putting it at this point or how they're managing you've seen pictures of the snow banks that are just insanely high there's snow resorts, ski resorts that are having to dig down so their chairs can go around it's insane. >> bill karins, thank you so much good seeing you. up next, a wrapup of the big wins at the oscars last night.

freezing cold system moves inland over the u.s.. on tuesday, 23 million americans were under winter weather alerts, with many those in california. the surprise snowstorms also bringing high winds, streaming across the southwest. and more snow tracking up across the pacific northwest. but the storm system is not spreading just snow, it's also spreading panic as resources go scarce. cities in the san bernardino mountains are facing food and fuel shortages because of dangerous conditions on the roads. to more bouts of heavy snow are expected in the sierra nevada mountains, and across northern california, over the next few days. it will take some time for snow to melt in the city of truckee, where snow banks seem to be taller than vehicles. california highway patrol is warning residents to stay off

normal. but what is still going on is assessing the number of dead. we got an update earlier today from the erie county executive. executive wide -- 39 deaths confirmed by the medical examiner. but park polencarz said that number is almost certain to rise. listen. >> there are additional bodies that have been received that are believed to be blizzard deaths but they do need to have an autopsy and additional work done including a 4-month-old who died on christmas day that the medical examiner's office is still trying to determine the death. >> reporter: so certainly the work of the medical examiner isn't over, and there are still large piles of snow around, and authorities have said there's still a chance they could find people in cars or people trapped under snow banks just because of how horrific this snow was. now, i can tell you there was some good news also earlier today, in part because of the melt that's already happened and the clearing that's already happened. but they were concerned about flooding come tomorrow when the

reports on this deadly blizzard are getting even more dire. at least 57 people are dead across the country. and while power, out for days, is finally back on for most, rescue crews are still searching for people trapped in cars. and tonight we know more snow is coming. all of this as a slow motion disaster is unfolding at some of the nation's busiest airports. long lines of passengers stuck, unable to travel for days, with the backlog at a standstill. several thousand flights canceled and nearly twice as many delayed. emilie ikeda leads us off tonight. >> reporter: tonight the city of buffalo buried and unrecognizable as the death toll from a devastating deluge of fierce winds and heavy snow continues to rise. officials reporting 27 deaths in erie county, new york. victims discovered in cars and snow banks. after the blistering blizzard brought even first responders to a standstill. some residents dying from exposure.
