World-renowned dancers will return to the stage for live performances this summer at Jacob’s Pillow, which recently announced its full list of performers for the 2021 summer festival.
Due to the on-going worldwide pandemic, all of the performances will take place outside with reduced audience capacity. All of the performances will also be available for viewing online.
This is the first summer festival at Jacob’s Pillow to feature both onsite and online programming. Onsite events run June 30-August 29, with online streaming through September 23.
“It is essential that we find safe and inventive ways to return to dance, to bring people back together, and put artists back to work,” Jacob’s Pillow Executive & Artistic Director Pamela Tatge said in statement. “The 2021 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival will share the restorative and uplifting power of dance: in-person at our campus, in our surrounding communities, and through live and on-demand events online to reach audiences across the world. The works featured in Festival 2021 will delve into the multiple histories that exist in the land of Jacob’s Pillow; center the work of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists, providing platforms for their stories to be told and archived; examine our relationship to the environment and bring us into dialogue with our magnificent site; and highlight artists who are experimenting with innovative ways to integrate augmented and virtual reality into their performances.”

Jacob's Pillow announces summer lineup for outdoor performances, virtual events

The 2021 summer Festival will be the first to feature on-site and online programming.
On-site events will run June 30-Aug. 29, with online streaming through Sept. 23. The newly imagined Festival — with the safety of artists, staff and audiences at the forefront of all planning — will feature commissioned works and world premieres and engage hundreds of artists who have had incredibly limited performance opportunities for the past year because of the global coronavirus pandemic. (Jacob's Pillow was forced to cancel its 2020 summer season in response to COVID-19.)
The 2021 Festival also is the first organized by an expanded curatorial team made up of Artistic and Executive Director Pamela Tatge and Associate Curators Melanie George and Ali Rosa-Salas.

As a PhD student at Stanford University in 2017, Zachary Burton was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After hearing the news, he immediately struggled with overcoming his own preconceived notions about the condition, and what living with it would mean.

“It was a huge reckoning for numerous reasons,” he tells
Fast Company. “Part of it was simply just that label—like, wow, I’m like this crazy person now. This can’t be true.”
To help reduce the stigma around mental illness for himself and others, Burton turned to live theater. He and fellow Stanford alumnus Elisa Hofmeister created a show called

If you’ve ever listened to “The Moth,” “Radio Diaries” or “This American Life,” you know the power of hearing real stories told by real people. If you’ve ever listened to a podcast, watched a YouTube video or read an online news article and immediately texted a link to your friend, you know how fast you can feel connected to others with the tap of a finger.
“The Manic Monologues” is a virtual theater experience designed to capture storytelling and shareability. Monologues of true stories, performed by professional actors, and pre-recorded conversations with Princeton students, experts and activists aim to disrupt the stigma around mental illness.
