Amol Myron good seasons under way now go away tell us why and so far so far so good kids are healthy they're facts and hard to get now after it and I think we just finished our 3rd game of the year so they're ready that they're ready to get after it now it's a team I'm working on over the summer we work a lot of shooting in transition was you know just trying to get better off financially and just kind of mentally prepared for different situations that may occur there in the course of the game yeah a lot of ladies coming back from last year's team which went to the state championship final and how that experience helped the team and get them ready for this year as good as the set of the set the bar pretty high and what the young kids come in and they kind of they got to go ahead and be able to step up and be able to contribute be able to just be able compete on the floor with them and with that being said I'm going to just write to coach be able to have that be out of for The Great to have be able to coach them up and things of that nature they want to they want to play hard they want to they want to be you know when it's been a game they can win for the coach as a lot of fun for me we talk about no matter whether you have a lot of players coming back or no players coming back the identity of the team's going to change from year to year what what may be changing as this year from the Lady Tigers. Right now we know we lost a very huge and you know Millie Skidmore and Sidney Wagner we lost mostly young ladies so that's the that's the whole there but I think our young kids are doing a really good job come and fill in a and m. Both of those numbers are higher than than what we anticipated or what we would like so what happens when else will the board elected to. There was a coach's meeting every couple weeks there's a meeting with Paragon in the admin team in the district with high school. Coaches. To discuss the project and the coach of the coaches had asked for the priorities to be as far as which project to start 1st to start the renovation inside the the school which also included that weight room and like I said a lot of spaces so the board elected last night to begin that particular piece so they will start. Honing in I guess so to speak or sharpening their pencil on the price for The Insider innovations that they have. While that project is going on they've kind of put on the hold of the field now. Kind of waiting for more information and better much better budget numbers and more of where we're at today. Sort of a devil's advocate question you know the question of the costs with the estimates of that have been kind of an issue. Is the board being a little overly optimistic Purrs that just things are coming in higher than things are coming in higher than what they and to say to them there's. Apparently some cost escalations. Anytime you don't do a project today and there are some months certain the with tomorrow what tomorrow brings in the market according to the architects are telling us the market is not very stable so you've got to get that piece they're playing a role in that and in the location of the field out the self there's I think several. Unknown cost because there's an elevation there you know the practice field the way it's this is up above the grade of field level so there's some added cost there as well so you know we were all very optimistic that both these projects would come in a lot lower than what they have been. You know is there a time line I ask because you know Arkansas there's been a few cities and schools are actually been kind of radically crying to walk in contracts because they're looking at building their corporate headquarters nerves and you know the price is really going to go up everything else is a real time pressure for the board because now to we need to get ride that is the most important thing is to get a ride and it also has to fit within our budget what we have said up to this point is. When we were doing this out of savings you know right now we're in the midst of the no Fema building that's going really well out in the no area and we're paying for that out of our savings and then of course part of the theme of Grant and this is the 2 projects here we're all out of savings as well so the board is elected not to run you know what tax bond issue they had at up to this point we hadn't decided to borrow any money we were just trying to pay for this out of the savings that we had collected in our school district account over the years so. We need to make sure we get it right be patient with it and that that's what we're trying to do. In the meantime board members received a bird's eye view of the construction of the new storm safe shelter an expansion an . Elementary school kind of a neat deal 1st to show the board the progress of the the building itself we have what we call a so class which is a discovery class within our school district in one of the things I do is and they work with drones and. The kids were able to fly those drones over the construction side and give our board a real time view so to speak of of the construction progress and. So that was pretty neat as different and to be able to see that but as far as the progress at the site they've got the feel of. The majority of it in the panels that are going up for the activity center part of the particular building. As they are arriving today actually when we're on the phone so the panel with Arthur arrive in the 1st of the week they will start to erect those and the report last night from Verizon is everything is on schedule the board also approved 2 other food related matters the board had elected to apply for a grant to begin feeding our students across the county supper and that will start to January 8th which is the when City after we come back from Christmas. That being said one of the requirements of the program itself is that there's a 10 minute downtime between the end of school and when the. Program suffer program begins and and so school starting in 2020 will end at 3 pm at the high school instead of 3 t.n. So that's a piece so we're excited about the program and looking forward to you know helping our families and kids out with a free supper meal there for 4 students or more schools doing this. There there are some Yeah there it is picked up some momentum with the grand opportunities that the federal government has put out there for for schools so that we you know anytime we get a chance to see kids we want to try to make sure we do that for me it's the right thing to do. It was a night of star studded honors at the Springdale school board meeting Tuesday night those honors include Springdale high school assistant principal Dawn I can Berger who was named Arkansas secondary assistant principal of the year school districts Ritchie for one of things that we do in Springdale and I don't know if the other districts do it as well as we honor students teachers administrators for their accomplishments that may be announced. Say earlier but we like to do them for the entire school board and I can burgers then and services but no school for 20 years and he's in his 6 years assistant principal at the spring the high school so obviously the big day was one of the announced that was actually made but it was a real pleasure to see him honored in front of the school board because of his great service to the district and I think Superintendent Dr Jim Rollins enjoyed doing that as well there are others who are on it as well that were in our schools 14 of our schools. Were given $41.00 awards when it comes to beating the odds or academic achievement or academic growth and in the state we are 2nd the state as far as total dollars given a district well over 600000 dollars for academic achievement academic growth and then to beat the odds is done by the University of Arkansas and several of our schools won those awards too meaning that your achievement is high considering the population of your student body and so that was kind of a neat thing that happened also our spring the high school Future Farmers of America Club was named one of the top f.f.a. Clubs in the United States at the recent national f.f.a. Convention and for those students were honored as well that kind of unusual for considering the spring. Probably more of an urban district the lot and also being a large. I guess that's that's a great question spring though of course for many many years was more agrarian and . We're like every other community in northwest Arkansas becoming more urban because of population growth but there's still a strong if a group in spring there always has been it's an excellent group when you go to washington county fair and you see the displays and how many blue ribbon say when pretty amazing so because of the strength of the f.f.a. Program 30 years it's not surprising it was named one of the tops in the country Michael Baker Brown was honored as Region 5 senior high school choral director of the year it's a great honor for him Mike Rounds at Harvard high school however high school is that it's Christmas musical this past weekend and all of this is that's a little spectacular and he's been assistant music director there for years and is does an excellent job so it was certainly good to see him rewarded board also received an update on the district's big construction project Dr Jerry Cleveland's talking about ongoing construction in the district obviously the biggest project is phase 2 of the Don Tyson school of innovation it's going to be completed in time for the fall of 2000 which means the capacity it will be a little been raised from originally they hope 411000 but now there's almost 400 students there and they'll be raised to 2000 so and of course students from all over the area they don't have to be in spring they can come that on ties and school innovation so that was a major I think as far as construction is concerned. School Board President Kevin own be presented a check on behalf of the board of the Springdale public schools education foundation that was actually used to the spring of public schools education foundation our school board wanted to do something for the students in our school so that was a contribution by our 7 school board members combined make a gift of $1100.00 because of the campaign at the spring the public schools education foundation is doing right now everything that they gain is matched and so that 11 and it is like $23.00 lottery and that is very nice the president school board Kevin Nolan be present that check. We're going to have all different kinds of things in there with our new rail yard area and to to be able to pull that all together with the bike park in the lake Atlanta park and all these things I really think that after the 1st of the year we're working with. To get the pricing down to where we can all you know we've got to be able live within a budget kernel but we feel like we can do that we're going to have to make some adjustments we've had great support from the administration in and Council and so we feel good about that and I think that that that work along 1st Street will be the 1st I mean along Arkansas will be the 1st thing the citizens will see that street were to work in the other thing that they'll see right after the 1st is to work down by the area on the south into the park which I like to call the butterfly park this is going to be that intermodal hub where we're going to redo that area and expand the parking and have a transportation hub there for the train. The buses obviously cars bicycles will even have plug ins for the electric cars really think that's going to be in the dish and down there. The Mount Heber in park is also on this 1st band a matter of fact we met today with ocean engineers Mr David hooker. Project Manager for the city and we met with them on budget today we have drawings and of course we're not we're not at 60 percent yet but we're close I think that once again that . If we do our work and we vet these things right I think we're going to be really proud of that work at home and he bringing the course which is also part of the road extension kernel that runs on indicate Springs the pond is filling there's probably going to need to be a little bit more work on that pond out there we finalized the drawings for that inclusive playground we're tremendously excited about that we finalized the budget our mayor has approved us to go ahead and move forward so that piece of it's already there so I think also in the spring or like light spring we ought to see some things happening out there now 1st would be the road extension and then just if I could just indulge you for a minute with I recreation side goodness you know we're in the deep in this basket our kids are Brax basketball all over town I can't thank Roger schools enough for allowing us into their gyms once again we've got about 90 teams that play and that's where it's course it's basketball season everybody's everybody's playing basketball and one other thing I want to brag on we had a great soccer season again well over 1000 in but almost 800 in the adult league we finish those up just about 30 days ago a lot of fun for the adults and for the kids and then of course our mission just as we started talking our football program we still have a pee wee's it's different now and we're in with this group called the. Friends of football in northwest Arkansas we partner with been built Silent Spring Hill in Fayetteville we all get together and play and Roger schools help us once again we played a lot of our games at Heritage on the turf the kids were super excited and we had of the 3 divisions we had teams into the finals and this is our only our 2nd year in the league Colonel So we feel like our kids are doing a good job really a comprehensive program it sounds like a lot of work being done keep up the good work thank you so much for talking to us Carl. You know as you've knighted the Springdale city council Tuesday city officials honored the youth can counsel graduating class of 2019 Mayor Doug Sprouse we're just in our 3rd year and we might. See some some adjustments. Based on our conversation with high school counselors with someone in the still district about how to. You know how to get the word out to the kids and how to select the students and and and I think that that program will continue to evolve a little bit but but but it's been a good program we think it's important and and we're planning on sticking with it what are some of the things you're hoping students learn from this. Well the main thing overall is just to. The. To plan a desire to be engaged in your community you know to you know we've got. We need young people and students to to be involved in and understand how other city government works you know how the processes have all the things that the city does that. That many of us don't we just don't think about it every day we we you know live our lives and we drive on roads and leave we you know we do things that you know we go to parks and we don't always consider. You know how we can make a difference in making those things better or ensuring that they stay great amenities serve or. Sharjah sister or city whatever it is our police department or fire department or public works. You know and I get by get an opportunity to those facilities to ask questions to to just learn and show more behind the scenes. Things that have to be dealt with to actually make a city work with the city get out of it. Well I think that I think what the city gets out of it is that we we help. Build. The future leaders of our city you know potentially at least at least as citizens that are engaged in that and that and that know. How decisions are my father my dad and and continue to you know hopefully as I grow older will. You know if I stay in that area they'll continue to want to be. Not necessarily an advocate for their city but a. Former resident that. Will help drive decisions of the city Mike's in the future place where they are going to live more they're going to raise their family. In addition the class of 3rd graders also attended the city council meeting that was pretty pile of 3rd grade teacher at young elementary and we have we have classes from schools come in every every now and again that we would love to see more worried than. To come to visit City Kansas City Hall on a field trip check out a fine but also to attend city council meetings and see the work you know she kind of government action and. You know usually it's tied to a curriculum there they're working through on government or are those types of things and that's what that was a kids came and a. Couple of them got up and spoke with kind of funny we were we were discussing lighter rezoning. You know because I wanted to have mostly kids of state with their parents and Mr Powell and watched the. Majority of meeting some stayed for all the meeting it was a fairly long night but there was a resulting discussion and several residents there to to speak. Against a particular rezoning that had been forwarded by the Planning Commission and one of the one of those students. Got up and spoke. Out because you were obviously she wasn't planning on it she didn't know what was coming but but after she heard some of the argument she got up and gave her $0.02 I thought that was great we enjoyed that. The reasoning item the youngster discussed involves rezoning nearly 40 acres on the east side of road youngster wasn't the only one council chamber was packed as neighbors in the developer offered comments in the lengthy thick session the council denied the resulting request. That had been approved by the Planning Commission this was for a from moving from a single family. Designation to a multi n.f.l. One multifamily but it might force not it's not apartments it's diplexers. It's what the developer is planning on or a mix of duplexes and single family and some of the neighbors. Down by Jane George park and some of the Nigers for their 2. To oppose that and and the. Measure did cycle. The council also approved next year's $50000000.00 city budget Yeah the budget got approved really not a lot of discussion you know of course we we've had a lot of discussion over the past several weeks. Budget Committee meetings and that council you know it's a it was a next year we're expecting at that year and that Mike's budgeting even for more of a challenge and more difficult but very proud of the Council on the discussions that were were had and and. The ones who we had we had 3 vote against the budget and at least in 2 of those answers is. No and it was just. An overall vote against the budget it was against the one or 2 things in the budget that I just didn't agree with so so you know and when you understand why that makes it not my job a lot of work together a lot better show it was a it was a good process always done and it's over but. We're ready to roll now for next year and as far as the Saori for elected officials and planning to be on the council I'm very appreciative of the Council of the. You know the elected officials in Springdale and that that site law has to be a new ordinance created and passed every year and and that's why we deal with baton and and we've never given rises in years when what our employees didn't get right but this year our boys did and there was a rise in there for. 4 elected officials close myself and our our city clerk and our city attorney. Vote was $5.00 to $3.00 with council members Jeff Watson Mike Overton and Mike Lawson voting No the city's budget doesn't balance with leaders projecting 40.46.7000000 dollars in revenue during the year leaving the city with a $3000000.00 deficit budget also includes includes an increase for Ozark Regional Transit which would include free rides for every passenger in a city in a pay raise for or t. Drivers Council also approved a new ordinance regulating small cell phone and tennis small sale you know the the the towers we see popping up everywhere we've we've had a few. Issues with some of them it have gone up in how I depart a right of way within the city of Springdale and. We're trying to protect that as much as we can if it's in our dot rather wider on a whole lot we can do about it. But we want to pass pass some rules that are the rules as far as the law would allow us to pass to give us at least some. And what those small cell towers look like you know what the polls look walk in short Manston says our local our local providers have ever really been good to work with this is more of a we've had some out of state 3rd party folks coming in and put some stuff in how I write a lot of it that I wouldn't want anywhere and just real disappointed that there's not not anything we can do about that and this doesn't change our bill to do anything about that either. Council also cancelled the committee meetings next week and the City Council meeting originally scheduled for Christmas Eve The Arkansas and Missouri railroad in the city of Springdale are installing a new rail crossing on Maple Street railroad president Karen Kreskin says the crossing will be equipped with a safety warning system includes gates and signals project as part of a plan to extend a maple across the railroad to provide street access for the Holcomb street fire station better access to the public and support future growth along Maple Street Prescott says the railroad will resume operation and management of its Hewitt Street property along the tracks between Emma and Huntsville avenues will be closed to public access January the 3rd Cresco says properties a key component for the city's future growth the Washington County Court will hear a 2nd proposal for a place in the county's aging emerge the communication system. Make it to northwest Arkansas until 1881 that once it came it became a fundamental story especially in our economic history so to explore that we're opening a new photo exhibit called working on the railroad that opens Tuesday December 17th and it will be a variety of historic images that date back to the very 1st time the trying to came in 1981 to the present day uses of trains for tourist excursions and them also hauling freight in and out of that area so we think that'll be a popular exhibit because we know there's a lot of railroad fans of fish not of those out there so we hope everybody will come and enjoy that exhibit it's up through June 20th so you've got plenty of time to see that young says real roads Krantz for the economy of the region it was an economic boom for farmers you know historically our economy in northwest Arkansas been based on agriculture and farmers before the railroad came in 1901 farmer said no way to get there it was very difficult to get your goods to market you know you going to take away again a load of to meit is that are hard to you know very very easily bruised and then down an old dirt road to fight Villard of Springdale or Rogers or and then you're not going to get much because how much can you carry in a wagon so when the railroad came it expanded opportunities for farmers to grow more crops to be able to ship them out easily to the larger population centers so it was it was a huge boost for our agricultural industry. And that's every kind of crops from fruits and vegetables to poultry It also connected us to the world it was easier to travel in and out of the region. Easier to transport the my all so I'll sometimes liken it to when we got the regional airport how that opened up the world to us and in my lifetime the railroad certainly opened up the world in the 1880s for Northwest Arkansas. I'm guessing there were a lot of small logging railroads were in the area with absolutely timber erat at that didn't even mention the timber industry that the railroad coming of the railroad led to a huge boom for the timber industry especially in Madison County south Madison County the Frisco bill the branch line out to Pettigrew and that allowed that little community to become a boom town for by spawn the timber industry so yeah you're absolutely right there's you cannot overstate the importance of the railroad to the local timber boom and that you know 18 eighties into the teens twenty's was was the big big economic times for the timber industry in the region building rods in the twisting turning in the Ozarks was an engineering challenge that's one thing I've learned from reading some of the information our photo archivist has gathered for this exhibit is how I'm stating the obvious to railroad buffs but I never stop think about how much the geography controls. Where that railroad is going to be placed. It's not just a matter of the towns wooing the railroad to stop come to our town it's it's geographically have can we get there can we pull that mountaintop or the train up that mountain it be easier to go around and go this way and and that's if you know for some towns that if the railroad pass them by that but signaled a big decline in their in their communities well being that it's it's an interesting history. All the way around from the human perspective of it to the economic perspective of it to the mechanical perspective of building the railroad and fueling the railroad the exhibit museum are free and open to the public the shine on the z m s 118 West Johnson Avenue in downtown spring do p. Endorsed 2 indoor soccer fields which we got in on before I mean it was it was just an excellent get for the city it's just going to take us a little time to get it to the standards that we would expect and that we would expect for a city building for municipal Public Building Council tabled a proposal ordinance that what is stablished rules are rules for a historic Bob cemetery the council decided to title that until after the 1st of the year so they could have more time to look at the the rules that were being proposed there were really many changes we've had rules in place since before I was Meyer and and they just haven't they haven't changed much but we're put them in ordinance form so they can it makes enforcement a little a little clearer. But any why we're we're going to we're going to discuss those it's probably a good time to just might sure we've got those the way we want to so Council want to take some time and and you know we'll get through the budget this year and everything next year's budget and then will for after the 1st of this year 1st of next year we'll cancel a look at it again the title to the 1st committee meeting in January the city Djoko was immaterial after it was abandoned many years ago. We've taken care of bluff Cemetery since probably the early to mid seventy's it was turned over to the city the city or the city took it on. Product projects not city projects but of course we're greeting our We're creating a whole municipal campus down here with our police station new courtroom and river . Bridge and city hall and that's happening over the next year and a half to 2 years now already well underway and so there's there's a lot going on both public and private investment in our down time. And it's my question to a certain extent cities are at the mercy of private developers and business owners and what you can do to twist arms or how do you encourage that while something sprinkles God in our downtown that nobody else has is that we're our downtowns in an Opportunity Zone and if you're familiar with the president of Trump's. Tax bill that was passed. Early last year. Opportunity Zones are tremendous incentive for investment and. In areas within that so. There's a lot of interest Springdale has actually for opportunity zones which is more than any other city in the state except for Little Rock and and our entire downtown and industrial area including those opportunities out so that was a huge deal and there's a lot of a lot of investment going to be happening as people you know and on opportunities around it it gives gives investors.
