New Air Ambulance Membership Regulation Goes Into Effect But Organizations Not Biting

Wyoming Life Flight
A new state law allows the Wyoming State Insurance Commission to regulate the Wyoming air ambulance membership organizations. Consumers pay for air ambulance memberships to try to avoid high prices if they ever need such services. This is a serious issue in rural areas of the state where there is a lack of emergency health care.
But Jeff Rude with the State Insurance Commissioners said it doesn't necessarily regulate pricing. That's because there is a chance that the air ambulance that picks up the individual is not registered with the membership they have signed up for.
But Rude said only one company is in the process of registering with the state.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 23, 2020
(LANSING, MICH) Anita Fox, Director of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), has joined a group of state insurance commissioners in a pledge to work with President-elect Joe Biden by providing health policy recommendations to the incoming administration.
The commissioners share President-elect Biden’s vision that no American should have to go without health care coverage. They believe comprehensive and progressive health care is essential to addressing urgent public health priorities, such as the COVID-19 and opioid crises, addressing racial disparities in the health care system, and ensuring enforcement of mental health parity.

>> exactly. >> we had these great bipartisan meetings in the health care committee where the first hearing we had five insurance -- state insurance commissioners, three from republican states, two from democratic states. they all agree, got to continue the cost sharing agreements. got to do that. two days later, second hearing, five governors, they all agreed, got to continue the cost sharing reduction payments. doesn't make any sense not to because it would drive insurance premiums up 20%. so the whole point of this thing was to get the exchanges and the premiums to go down and, in addition, it would increase the deficit by $194 billion, according to cbo. >> because the government would have to pay more subsidies? >> yes. >> exactly.

are called these noncompliant plans for the year 2014, for a year, for those people who have those policies and like those policies and would like to see them renewed, even though they've already received letter that is they were canceled. the insurance companies, though, in order to do this, they have to notify all of these policy holders who might be able to get their old plans back, that there is alternative coverage opportunities available through the exchange. the benefits may be better for them. >> right. >> they will be losing some benefits. that's what they have to notify them of that. there will be no new people who will be eligible for what is called these old noncompliant plans and this is the wild card. i want you to weigh in on this, gloria. state insurance commissioners, they can veto. they can veto all of this if they want to, which would throw a huge monkey wrench into this so-called fix. wouldn't it? >> you know, it would, wolf. and in talking to sources
