tonight we're learning officers shot and killed a murder suspect during a widespread manhunt in georgia. police say 40-year-old andre longmore gunned down three men and a woman saturday in a subdivision in hampton. that's about 30 miles south of atlanta. today officers caught longmore in nearby clayton county. a deputy and a police officer were wounded during the deadly run-in. tonight the alabama woman who vanished after reporting a toddler walking alone on the highway is back home safely. police say 25-year-old carlee russell returned last night, two days after a massive search for the then missing nursing student. cbs news' astrid martinez has been tracking the case all weekend. astrid, what are you learning? >> reporter: mark, good evening. this is the outcome everyone was hoping for but the circumstances surrounding carlee russell's disappearance still remain a mystery. after a desperate two-day search, 25-year-old carlee russell is safe. police say she returned home

today's encounter. here's elwyn lopez. >> reporter: tonight, after evading capture for nearly two days, a startling end to the manhunt for a georgia mass shooting suspect. henry county sheriff's office confirming 40-year-old, andre longmore, accused of gunning down four people in a rural subdivision, was killed this afternoon after coming face-to-face with law enforcement. authorities say a henry county deputy and a clayton county police officer were injured while trying to arrest the suspected gunman. hampton police telling our affiliate, wsb, that the suspect's deadly spree started saturday morning with an attempted carjacking. among the victims police say 66-year-old ronald jeffers, remembered by his church in service today as a vital part of the choir. >> god, i thank you for the testimony of brother ron. the kindness he treated others with. >> reporter: and our affiliate is reporting that both of those

they were all in their 60s, a veteran who had his car stolen. another person in their mid-60s. it was a congregant of a nearby church and the community is trying to digest this and find out what was the mow vaccination. so far police have not identified one. only that the shooter lived in the same subdivision as where these crimes took place. here is the sheriff of henry county describing exactly how this apprehension went down. >> we engaged the suspect. the suspect returned fire and hit the ground running. we gave chase. reengaged the suspect, he produced a handgun begun. shot were fired, gunfire was exchanged. the suspect was neutralized. the citizens of hampton, the county of henry, metro atlanta area, the entire state of georgia can breathe a little easier. >> and in the process of apprehending the suspect, we're told that several police officers were also injured.
