didn't leave bain and all of that. it does, lanny, feel in some ways like an effort to distract from what most american people see as reality of their daily lives, whether or not they have a job and whether or not the economy is improving. >> no doubt an effort to distract and no doubt i agree with rich 100% suggesting it is a felony is way over the top. if we stick to the facts mitt romney wasn't running bain capital when he was running the olympics period. innuendo and suggesting felonies is way over the top. so i agree with that. the american people want to hear about the economy and i agreed with karl that they are making a mistake not focusing on independent voters whether they're getting turned off by this food fight. give me a break, rich, about outrage and all the adjectives, the swift boats felt betrayed therefore they could lie about john kerry's disgusting smears in the swift boat ads. i didn't hear karl outraged
contributors. lanny, what is your reaction to that. >> i have to laugh at my friend karl rove talking about negative ads and outrage just. i'm just shocked that george bush in 2004 didn't say anything about swift boat ads. outrage just, negative ads. i'm shocked that karl is shocked. marchover, mitt romney use ad clip of barack obama saying that he didn't know anything about the economy. when he got caught that was actually a comment where barack obama was quoting john mccain, do you know what mitt romney said about that ad, what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. so number one, give me a break with this self-righteous outrage about distorted negative ads. romney made it an art form, to destroy who was it, destroy newt gingrich, rick perry with some of the worse, nasty, awful barrage of negative ads i have ever seen. he is not in a great position to complain. martha: we'll see what rich thinks about it. he zeroed in on the issue of stephanie cutter saying there could be a felony that
necessarily be working and certainly not enough in terms of what republicans want to see mitt romney put up, which is evidence of that he created jobs at bain and to really flush out what his record there was. but we can tell, i think, from this reaction that the romney campaign is take on some water around bain and you've seen this narrative particularly out of these super p.a.c.s trying to paint him as out of touch. they are talking about his failure to release tax returns, some disclosures around these s.e.c. filings to show he was on southeast company's documents after 1999. it is a problem. if you remember back when john kerry was running these swift boat ads starting to run in 2004 right before the election, this is beginning much earlier than that and democrats feel like they want to define mitt romney as often and as early as they can so that -- they almost knee
for their records. i think there's a very conservative military community that does not like him and going to speak out about him. it's not john kerry. they're not saying he lied about his personal record, about his medals. >> and the rationale is a no-brain no-brainer. people say obama's handling of terrorism is a reason to put him back in office. republicans are seeing those numbers and know they need to go up with ads like this. >> the swift boat stuff came out much later in the race. the fact this stuff is coming out now is a sign of the nasiness to come. >> the swift boat ad changed the trat jectory of that race. there are some dangers for obama on this but not really. the swift boat ads, those were so personal. you can't take away from obama what happened under his watch. i think that people just normal everyday people walking around are grateful for that. there's no way a republican ad is going to change that. >> there's an argument every time you talk about killing osama bin laden, that's better than talking about the jobs numbers. >> but the question is, to what extent the fact that he did kill
