Birmingham COVID-19 numbers for February 5th, 2021
As of the entry deadline for the 2021 All England, February 9, an athlete’s decision on whether to participate was informed by knowledge that 3328 confirmed new COVID-19 cases were detected in the preceding week for the city of Birmingham, where the venue is.  Granted that was remarkably down from a scary weekly total of 1100 cases higher seven days prior.

Badminton: Pearly-Thinaah stop Stoeva sisters to land Swiss Open title

Stellar feat: Pearly Tan (right) and M. Thinaah beat world No. 14 Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva 21-19,21-12 in the final at the St Jakobshalle in Basel yesterday.
PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah proved they are the stars in the making when they clinched the Swiss Open title in just their 10th start on the World Tour and 21 months into their partnership.
The world No. 30 powered their way to a comprehensive 21-19,21-12 victory over the Stoeva sisters, Gabriela and Stefani, the world No. 14 from Bulgaria in 43 minutes at the St Jakobshalle in Basel yesterday.
It was Pearly-Thinaah’s fourth title of their career, but certainly the biggest yet as their previous triumphs were all from satellite tournaments in 2019 - the year they started their partnership.

Carolina Marin beat PV Sindhu 21-12, 21-5 in the final of the 2021 Yonex Swiss Open in Basel on Sunday. The World No. 3 from Spain, who has had a sensational start to the year, winning the two Thailand Opens and reaching the final of the World Tour Finals, made short work of the match against the World No. 7 Indian.
The first game started with Marin winning the first point after having started in typical aggressive fashion. But what followed was an exciting passage of play where serve was exchanged at every point until Sindhu won three straight to make it 6-4. This preceded a sequence of five consecutive points won by Marin, with the Spaniard going into the break 11-8 up.
