Imagine Foundation donates $1M to OPRF - Wednesday Journal

Representatives from the Imagine Foundation handed over their first check to Oak Park and River Forest High School last week and it was a big one: $1 million. The foundation has a goal of raising $12.5 million to help pay for estimated $102 million cost of Project 2, which will tear down and rebuild the southeast portion of the high school with a new 10 lane swimming pool, a new, third-floor gym and other improvements.

Divisions over Israel-Hamas war create tensions at Oak Park and River Forest High School

Tensions are high at Oak Park and River Forest High School, reflecting global strife over the war in Gaza, as pro-Israel and pro-Palestine students and parents report unfair treatment, bullying, harassment and feeling unsafe at school. The school, for example, has received 16 formal complaints since Oct. 7, but eight were anonymous complaints and therefore not investigated, officials said. Five complaints were determined to have already been dealt with. Of the three remaining complaints that were investigated, two alleged antisemitism and one alleged harassment of the school’s Middle East and North African student group. Those, a spokesperson said, were followed up in a manner that “focused on taking an educational approach preserving the dignity of all involved and ensuring a safe learning environment.”The situation, however, escalated at last week’s school board meeting after one parent called for the firing of one teacher and the removal from advisory posts of two others amid allegations of perpetuating antisemitism, racism or misinformation about the war.

Gun control group urges OPRF to share safe storage information with parents

Local activists from Moms Demand Action gun control group have moved on to Oak Park and River Forest High School urging the school to send out information to parents about safe gun storage. A few weeks after appearing at an Oak Park Elementary District 97 school board meeting to urge District 97 to send parents information about safe gun storage, Oak Park resident Jenna Leving Jacobson delivered the same message to the OPRF in a public comment she made at the Sept. 21 meeting of the OPRF school board.Jacobson said that schools sending out information about safe gun storage can save lives.“We need to make sure that youth in our community do not have unsupervised access to firearms,” Jacobson said.Jacobson wants school districts to take advantage of a new state law that permits them to provide safety information including information about safe gun storage.“Educating adults about firearm storage is important,” Jacobson said.Jacobson cited a CDC study that showed that 20% of high school students seriously considered suicide within last year and that suicide attempts with a gun are much more lethal than suicide attempts by other means.“Most people who attempt suicide do not die unless they use a gun,” Jacobsen said. “In fact 90% of suicide attempts with a gun result in death which is a much higher fatality rate than any other form of self-harm.”

More Black students in sophomore Honors at OPRF

This year 41% of all Black sophomores at Oak Park and River Forest High School are taking an Honors or Advanced Placement course. That compares to 36 percent of Black sophomores at OPRF one year ago. That increase is probably mostly accountable to last year’s implementation of the Honors for All freshman curriculum at OPRF. At the Sept. 7 Committee of the Whole Meeting of the OPRF school board, the school administration presented a one year evaluation of the revised freshman curriculum which eliminated the College Prep level for most freshman courses. In the subjects of English, World History, Physics and French or Spanish I OPRF freshman are enrolled in either an Honors class or a Transitions or remedial class with the great majority of freshmen being placed in Honors classes. The goal of Honors for All is to give more Black and Hispanic students, and more students in general, access to rigorous Honors and AP classes. The 32-page report by the administration reported that the school had maintained similar achievement patterns and made what the report refers to as “small gains” in increased access to Honors courses. The changed curriculum is commonly referred to as detracking. But the disparity among Black and white sophomores at OPRF is still great. Some 77% of white sophomores, and 85% of Asian sophomores are taking Honors or AP classes this year compared to 41% of Black sophomores and 60% of Hispanic sophomores.

OPRF joins national lawsuit accusing social media companies of harming students

Oak Park River Forest High School District 200 has joined a federal class action lawsuit a California law firm has filed against major social media companies, such as Meta and TikTok.Last week, the OPRF school board voted 5-0 to join the class action lawsuit filed by the Frantz Law Group. Board members Mary Anne Mohanraj and Audrey Williams-Lee abstained. The lawsuit alleges that social media companies have behaved negligently and recklessly in a way that has harmed students and that school districts have incurred costs to treat the harms caused by practices of social media companies. "We allege that Meta, TikTok, Snap, YouTube, and other social media companies have engaged in reckless and negligent misconduct that has caused a mental health crisis among our youth," said James P. Frantz, on behalf of the plaintiff school districts in an April news release. "Social media companies are and have been well aware of the harm they cause. It must stop, and we will fight to hold these social media companies accountable for choosing profit over the mental health and safety of children and their families." After the meeting, school board president Tom Cofsky said that the lawsuit is not about money.“My decision has absolutely nothing to do with money,” Cofsky told the Wednesday Journal. “It has to do with we have a real issue and the real issue is that there is preying on our students through social media.”
