Jeddah and Djerba to host emerging chess talents

A brainchild of Chokri Saidi, a French-Tunisian entrepreneur, the Djerba Chess Festival aims to combine chess, friendship, culture and tourism on the beautiful island of Djerba, the largest island off the coast of North Africa — which is also known as the ‘island of dreams’. Furthermore, Saidi has gone a step further in his chess organizing pursuits and, from this year, he is also organizing the prestigious Jeddah International Youth Chess Festival. Diana Mihajlova informs.

Vishy Anand inaugurates Chennai Grand Masters 2023

Vishy Anand inaugurated the Chennai Grand Masters 2023 by making the first move on D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi's board. They had a relatively calm draw. Alexandr Predke (SRB) had good chances against Pentala Harikrishna. However, he blundered away his advantage. The endgame expert, Harikrishna, does not miss these chances to secure a half point. Pavel Eljanov (UKR) made an incorrect offer of queen trades, which resulted in him losing an exchange. The already difficult endgame turned worse for him and his opponent Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) scored his first-ever classical win over his opponent. Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) was determined to push for a win, but a draw was the maximum result he could get. | Photos: Shahid Ahmed

CCT Finals: Abdusattorov and Caruana survive

Fabiano Caruana and Nodirbek Abdusattorov advanced to the semifinals of the Champions Chess Tour Finals after going through the ‘survival stage’ on Tuesday. The two players who were knocked out of the competition in this stage were Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Hikaru Nakamura, with the latter coming inches away from reaching the semis via the longest path. The U.S. star would have needed to win three matches on a single day — he beat Denis Lazavik and MVL before losing in Armageddon to Abdusattorov. | Photo: chess.com / Thomas Tischio
