For most people, the idea of quitting college to start a car company is both incredibly daring and a bit bonkers, but Troels Vollertsen, founder of Zenvo Automotive, has no regrets. Fourteen years on, the marque is now firmly established among Europe’s boutique hypercar brands. At Zenvo’s facility in Præstø, Denmark, only five cars per year are made, each one hand-built and entirely bespoke. And while the small automaker inhabits the same rarified space as Koenigsegg, Pagani and Automobili Pininfarina, its cars have their own distinct character: lightweight, driver-focused and molded by motorsport.

When a kid draws a race car, it usually comes with angles, huge tailpipes, and a wing so large you could serve Thanksgiving dinner for your extended family on it. In a kid’s dream it has awesome power and can go super fast while turning heads and spitting flames. So clearly Zenvo, Denmark’s only car manufacturer, is staffed by big kids, because that pretty much describes its 1177bhp TSR-S hypercar.

On track in the mad, mad, mad Zenvo TSR-S

It’s rare to find a car that can give a Bugatti a run for its money. Something with weapons-grade engineering, huge gobs of power on tap, looks from 1950s sci-fi and a soundtrack capable of disturbing partially deaf people three towns over is rare, yet Zenvo’s TSR-S reckons it can have a pop. With 1,177bhp and 840lb ft coming from a mid-mounted 5.8-litre twin-supercharged V8, the Zenvo has the grunt down, but whether it has the rest remains to be seen.

Unless you’re a huge petrolhead, you’re unlikely to have heard of Zenvo, so it’s best to lead with a short history lesson. Zenvo, on its 2007 inception, became Denmark’s only car manufacturer. Rather than start with a tiny city car or a luxury saloon, Zenvo’s team of engineers opted to make a lightweight sports car. Company founder Troels Vollertsen had spent his career turning slow cars into faster ones, so when it came to his own, things went from “lightweight and simple” to “hypercar” rather quickly. Powertrain and chassis development is all done in house, with Vollertsen at the helm making sure things are as lunatic fast as possible before they’re allowed to head out of the door.

Denmark's Only Supercar Maker, Zenvo, Wants to Go Global

Zenvo is Denmark's only supercar maker. It currently hand-builds about five cars per year.
The company doesn't mess around, and its entry-level vehicle produces more than 1,100 horsepower.
Zenvo's founder told Insider about his plans to expand the brand globally and up production numbers.
The ultra-luxury supercar space is a busy one. Bugatti is, arguably, king of the hill with the 1,500-horsepower, $3 million Chiron, although McLaren, Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, and Mercedes all have, at one point or another, produced similar cars. All of those automakers are attached to huge parent companies (Bugatti and Porsche are under Volkswagen, for example), seeped in history, or both.
