Meta's oversight board to investigate posts about Australian Indigenous vote

Meta's oversight board said on Friday it will examine two cases on how the social media giant handled potentially misleading posts that were shared ahead of the Australian referendum on Indigenous recognition in October last year. The board, which is funded by Meta but run independently, said the cases were selected to assess Meta's content moderation policies on false or misleading voting information and voter fraud. The vote was held amid a deeply divisive debate in the country, and amid fears that a misinformation campaign was influencing voters.

Voting begins in Australia in landmark Indigenous Voice referendum

Australians began voting on Saturday in a historic referendum, the first in almost a quarter of a century, to decide whether to recognise its First Peoples in the constitution, as requested by the country's Indigenous leaders six years ago. Australians will simply write "Yes" or "No" on the ballot paper, after a question asking whether they agree to alter the 122-year-old constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people, and create an Indigenous body, called the Voice to Parliament, that can provide advice to the government on Indigenous issues. Doors to polling booths open at 8 a.m. (from 2100 GMT on Friday in Sydney and Melbourne to 2400 GMT in Perth), although more than 5 million people have already voted at early polling centres, overseas, or through postal votes.

Musk's X disabled feature for reporting electoral misinformation

Elon Musk's X, formerly called Twitter, disabled a feature that let users report misinformation about elections, a research organisation said on Wednesday, throwing fresh concern about false claims spreading just before major U.S. and Australian votes. After introducing a feature in 2022 for users to report a post they considered misleading about politics, X in the past week removed the "politics" category from its drop-down menu in every jurisdiction but the European Union, said the researcher Reset.Tech Australia. Users could still report posts to X globally for a host of other complaints such as promoting violence or hate speech, the researcher added.

Australian prime minister will set a referendum date for Indigenous Voice to Parliament

Australian Prime Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday he expects public support for creating a so-called Indigenous Voice to Parliament will grow after he focuses the nation’s minds on the issue by setting a date for Australia’s first referendum in a generation. Albanese will announce on Wednesday a date for a referendum that would enshrine in the constitution an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, a collection of advocates aimed at giving the nation’s most disadvantaged ethnic minority more say on government policy. Albanese has long maintained confidence that the referendum would succeed despite opinion polls showing marginal majority support for the Voice waning in recent months as the public debate has become more heated and divisive.
