Cinerama reopening pushed to 2025, Deadline says

Hollywood film fans will have to wait a little longer for a classic theater to reopen. The Cinerama Dome and former Arclight Cinemas won’t reopen next year as planned, Deadline reports. Instead, a redesign of the space means the second quarter of 2025 seems like a probable time for reopening. The outlet previously reported an […]

Leonard Quart | Letter from New York: 'Searching for Mr. Rugoff' and a bygone era of NYC cinema

In the 1960s and ‘70s New York, film buffs and cineastes like my wife and I used to go regularly to Upper East Side art theaters like the Paris, Cinema 1 and 2, the Beekman, the Plaza, and the Sutton owned by Donald Rugoff.
We knew little or nothing about who he was, except that his father owned a chain of theaters in New York that he took over, but we loved those sleek, upscale theaters — many of them purposely designed and located in the blocks around Bloomingdale’s Department store. It was a wealthy area with a very high grossing potential.

AMC eyes ArcLight theaters. What about the Cinerama Dome?

AMC Entertainment, owner of the world’s largest theater chain, is eyeing cinema locations previously operated by ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres.
In a Tuesday filing, AMC Chief Executive Adam Aron said the company is “in discussions” with “multiple landlords” of locations previously operated by the popular Los Angeles-based circuits.
The Leawood, Kan.-based company on Tuesday said it reached an agreement to raise $230.5 million in cash by selling equity to investment firm Mudrick Capital Management, exchanging 8.5 million shares at a price of approximately $27.12 per share.
AMC said it would use the cash to acquire additional theater leases and improve existing locations. The deal differs from AMC’s multiple previous capital-raising efforts during the pandemic, which were intended to keep the company out of bankruptcy court as theaters suffered from closures, restrictions and a lack of new Hollywood movies.

What will be the Cinerama's Hollywood ending? - Los Angeles Times

Their early audiences called them “flickers,” and it was a better name than they realized. Because — as the lights going out on the Hollywood Cinerama remind us — almost everything about the movies can end up short-lived and elusive.
Stardom is like that. Actors whose fabulous faces were celebrated on several continents and whose fabulous salaries were celebrated by their bankers could and did die unknown and broke.
So were movies themselves — throwaway amusements, no more durable than a Ferris wheel ride. Whoever foresaw the immortality of cable TV syndication, cult followings and DVDs? Physical film could go up in a fiery whoosh. Unstable and volatile, nitrate film stock can actually self-conflagrate. The thousands of silent films lost in spontaneous studio fires were the cinematic equivalent of losing a wing of the Louvre. L.A.’s first film-stock fire, in January 1905, was in a “motion picture storeroom” at 1st and Spring streets downtown. It belonged to a bumptious, far-sighted showman named Thomas Lincoln Tally, who in 1902 had already opened L.A.’s first dedicated movie theater, on Main Street, a few blocks away. Keep his name handy; you’ll be wanting it presently.
