Pope Francis and Islam: Three cornerstones of a magisterium

By Andrea Tornielli
There is a common thread linking three important interventions of Pope Francis regarding interreligious dialogue, and Islam in particular.
It is a magisterium that indicates a road map with three fundamental points of reference: the role of religion in our societies, the criterion of authentic religiosity, and the concrete way to walk as brothers and sisters to build peace. We find them in the speeches that the Pope gave in Azerbaijan in 2016; in Egypt in 2017; and now during his historic trip to Iraq, in the unforgettable meeting in Ur of the Chaldeans, the city of Abraham.
The interlocutors of the first speech were the Azerbaijani Shiites, but also the other religious communities of the country. The second speech was mainly addressed to the Egyptian Sunni Muslims. Finally, the third was addressed to a wider interreligious audience made of a Muslim majority, yet including not only Christians but also representatives of the ancient Mesopotamian religions.

US Bishops promote Catholic Relief Services collection to 'protect human dignity'

WASHIGTON: Providing aid for people who suffer from hunger, war, natural disasters, racial injustice, religious persecution and the impact of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic - these are some of the areas of the intervention of Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
CRS supports Catholic organizations that carry out international relief and solidarity efforts. It collects an annual national contribution during Lent, through which Catholics can help the most vulnerable people in the United States and around the globe.
For many parishes in the United States, this year's collection, organized under the theme “Help Jesus in disguise”, will take place on 13 – 14 March.
Contributions to the CRS collection are distributed to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for international relief and development; the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Office of Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) for refugee resettlement; USCCB Office of International Justice and Peace for advocacy on government policy; the USCCB Secretariat on Cultural Diversity in the Church for Pastoral Care for Migrants, Refugees, and Travelers and ministry to Asian and Pacific Islanders; Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) for legal assistance to immigrants; and the Holy Father’s Relief Fund to assist Pope Francis’ outreach to suffering people worldwide.

Archbishop Kondrusiewicz: The world needs sages and saints, not revolutionaries

By Vladimir Rozanskij
The world needs "sages and saints", not "reformers" or "revolutionaries" says Msgr. Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, celebrating the consecration Mass of the new church of St. Casimir in Stolbtsy, in the province of Minsk on 7 March.
It is one of the first public gestures of the Archbishop Emeritus of Minsk, who had spent months in exile and then retired on January 3, after difficult negotiations with the Belarusian authorities. Quoting the French theologian Marie-Dominique Chenu, he stressed that "the most important thing in human life is wisdom".
In his homily, reported extensively by the Belarusian media, Kondrusiewicz explained that wisdom is manifested "in the ability to adequately organize the life of man himself and of society, and also in that of making the necessary decisions for this, knowing objectively evaluate situations ". For this reason, the archbishop proposed to the faithful present to "look through the prism of divine law, to understand who we really are, whether we are authentic or artificial Christians".

Yangon, activists and trapped students freed; 40 arrested

By Francis Khoo Thwe
After a night blocked by the security forces at gunpoint in the Sanchaung neighbourhood, most of the trapped activists and students managed to escape this morning.
According to eyewitnesses the soldiers withdrew around 6 in the morning. But not everyone is free. A list of 40 people has been posted to social media, mostly students from East Yangon University, who were arrested.
Yesterday, in an attempt to reduce pressure on activists in Sanchaung, several groups organized impromptu demonstrations to distract law enforcement.
So far, the junta has killed over 60 people and arrested at least 2,000. But violence as a deterrent does not seem to stop the population. Even today there are demonstrations in many cities. In North Okkalapa (Yangon), medical university students have called for the release of the minister of the democratic government Zaw Wai Soe.

The Rite of Scrutinies adopts new norm

By Catherine Wan
Prior to baptism before Easter, the Elects of Sacred Heart Cathedral parish accompanied by their sponsors, celebrated the First Scrutiny on Mar 8. They would undergo two more Scrutinies on Mar 15 and Mar 22.
The scrutiny was conducted in the respective languages (BM, Chinese and English) at different venues of the parish. The ritual in Chinese was celebrated by parish priest Fr Paul Lo, while the BM by Fr Sunny Chung, and the English rite by Fr Joshua Liew.
Altogether there were 53 BM speaking Elects, 13 elects from English RCIA and nine Elects from Chinese RCIA.
In the past, the scrutinies were usually held on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent during Sunday Mass.  Due to the ongoing SOP protocol, the Rite of Scrutinies would be celebrated apart from the Sunday Mass.

New Bishop of Sibolga: 'Let's walk together'

By Mathias Hariyadi
Pope Francis appointed Father Fransiskus Tuarman Sinaga  as the new bishop of the Diocese of Sibolga on Saturday. The diocesan priest comes from the same region, North Sumatra province, which includes Nias Island.
Born in 1972 in Penggalangan, Archdiocese of Medan, Bishop Tuarman Sinaga has been a priest since 2003. For years he served in the parish of Gunungsitoli, capital of Nias, and as an educator at St Peter's Aek Tolang Minor Seminary in Sibolga.
After studying moral theology at Urbaniana University in Rome, he became the director of the Dian Mandala Diocesan Pastoral Institute in Gunungsitoli.
Mgr Sinaga will be the third bishop of Sibolga, which was set up as an apostolic prefecture in 1959 and elevated to the rank of Diocese in 1980. He will be the first bishop from the diocesan clergy, after two Capuchin friars, Anicetus Bongsu Antonius Sinaga and Ludovicus Simanullang.
