Even as the Electoral College affirmed Joe Biden s victory, President Trump and his allies continue to push unfounded claims that the election was stolen. While their disinformation campaign didn t overturn the results, it has sown distrust among voters. A recent poll found that only one in five Trump supporters believe the election is settled and Biden is the legitimate winner.
When elected officials use disinformation as a political weapon, our society s information intermediaries - primarily news media outlets and social media platforms - are one of the first lines of defense. Here s what my colleagues and I who study disinformation at Harvard s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society have learned about how they can respond effectively. ....

President Trump’s media criticism is usually binary there are “good stories,” favorable to him, and then the other category.
Most news coverage on Monday fell into that other category. One by one, presidential electors in all 50 states and the District of Columbia formally recognized Joseph R. On Oct. 13, before President Trump with only falsehoods as ammunition began live-tweeting his attempt to overturn an election he lost, Emily Bazelon published an article in the New York Times Magazine entitled, “Free Speech Will Save Our Democracy: The First Amendment in the Age of Disinformation.” In this piece, Bazelon presents and questions the American free speech jurisprudence, according to which false statements and hurtful speech on public issues are presumptively protected by the First Amendment because “the ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas.” She wonders if the time has come for Americans to revisit the way they envision free speech. ....
