Low saguaro reproduction numbers at national park in Tucson

Low saguaro reproduction numbers at national park in Tucson

The latest count last year represents a roughly 7% increase from the 2010 saguaro census.
But experts tell the Arizona Daily Star that they worry about the low number of young saguaros that are cropping up to replace their towering elders.
“We’re definitely concerned about it, but we’re not alarmed,” longtime park biologist Don Swann said.
The region has had a drought cycle that dates to the mid-1990s and the long dry stretch appears to be impacting both reproduction and the survival rate for newly sprouted saguaros, according to Swan.

Anthony Mundine promises he's walking away from boxing — for real this time — but some fight fans believe he never should have been allowed into the ring for a swan song on Saturday night.
The Australian icon was humiliated in little over two minutes by countryman Michael Zerafa in Bendigo, ending an illustrious career on a depressing note as The Man resembled a shell of the fighter he was in his heyday.

Warning to avoid swimming and fishing in parts of Avon and Swan Rivers

Warning to avoid swimming and fishing in parts of Avon and Swan Rivers
The Department of Health is warning members of the public to avoid areas of the Swan River where dead fish are visible and not to collect dead fish. Fishing in the area, as well as direct contact with the water, is also not advised.
The warning follows advice from the Parks and Wildlife Service at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) that at least 600 dead fish have been reported in the Swan River.
The fish, mostly bream, have been reported near Garratt Road Bridge in Bayswater and upstream, however the extent of the fish kill is still being investigated.

The Bay Area's most anticipated restaurants opening this spring

The Bay Area's most anticipated restaurants opening this spring
After a year of casual fare, promising new fine dining restaurants are about to debut

Many of the most exciting eats to emerge during the pandemic have been casual, takeout-oriented affairs, including pop-ups, ghost kitchens and home operations. But a rush of fine dining is on its way, with several of spring’s most anticipated openings leaning high-end and coming from chefs who used to work in Michelin-starred kitchens.
The recent lull in splashy, three-dollar-sign restaurant debuts makes sense with the pandemic, but now chefs are getting vaccinated and indoor dining is reopening across the Bay Area. Finally able to envision a future where their dining rooms can be full, these chefs have decided to open their doors this spring — and many more are likely to follow this summer and fall. Imminent arrivals include the long-awaited Cantonese restaurant Empress by Boon in Chinatown, as well as Ernest, an ex-Rich Table chef’s venture.

Barry Potter says all Aucklanders should be very proud of the massive redevelopment that is transforming the Downtown CBD and inner harbour.
"I want to acknowledge the patience that Aucklanders have had through the works that are being done. You can't do the kind of scale of work, change that's been achieved without disruption.
"The solutions down there will be truly transformational when they open up over the next couple of months," says Potter, who is the leading engineer in charge of the massive re-development of Auckland's City centre.
