What would Liz Cambage say? Australian swimmers for Tokyo Olympics have one thing in common in photo

A promotional photo of Australia's top swimmers and divers ahead of the Tokyo games may have unwittingly reignited debate about the racial diversity of athletes chosen to promote the Olympics.
Speedo plugged its 'exclusive Tokyo 2020 swimwear range' with an impressive 'parade of champions' team photo taken at Sydney Olympic Park aquatic centre on Thursday.
But with the exception of diving champion Melissa Wu, 14 of the 15 athletes used by Speedo and the Australian Olympic Committee in the main photos are white.

NRL 2021: National Non-Contact Rugby League Program, Tiwi Islands, NRL, Matt Bowen visit remote region

The Northern Territory's remote Tiwi Islands are renowned for producing Australian Rules champions including Maurice and Cyril Rioli and Michael Long.
But two weeks ago NRL legend Matt Bowen was the star attraction as the former Cowboys fullback helped to host skills sessions at Tiwi College as part of the National Non-Contact Rugby League Program.
The NRL and Touch Football combined to deliver the Government-funded program, the organisations each providing a game development officer to lead clinics across a Tuesday and Wednesday.
And despite the Aussie Rules posts on Tiwi College's sweeping oval and a painting of Cyril Rioli in one classroom leaving little doubt about the preferred sport, students quickly warmed to rugby league and Steeden balls were flying in equal measure to Sherrins.

Coronavirus vaccine: EU unblocks 1m AstraZeneca vaccine doses for Papua New Guinea

London | The European Union has told Trade Minister Dan Tehan in Brussels that it will not stand in the way of any AstraZeneca shipment of vaccines to Papua New Guinea, ending weeks of resistance to Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s request.
But the stand-off over the shortfall of EU-sourced AstraZeneca vaccines for Australia itself looks set to continue, with Mr Tehan saying only that “we agreed we would keep those discussions going”.
Papua New Guinea has already received 132,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine via the Covax program.
Mr Tehan said EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis had assured him that the vaccine shipment of 1 million doses for PNG, where the COVID-19 crisis remains menacing, could go ahead.

Column: Vaccine the key to getting 135,000 into Indy 500

Police vehicles line the track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Thursday, April 16, 2020, before the funeral of slain Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Breann Leath. There are more than 300 acres inside the gates of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, enough room to fit Vatican City, Yankee Stadium, The White House, Liberty Island, the Taj Majal, Roman Colosseum, Churchill Downs and the Rose Bowl. All at the same time. So if there's a facility that can safely host 135,000 fans during a pandemic, it would be Indianapolis. The speedway has been approved to host 40% its capacity for the Indy 500 next month, which will make it the largest sporting event since the start of the pandemic. (The Indianapolis Star via AP)

But the speedway is not your average place. She's a behemoth along Georgetown Road and 16th Street, the largest sporting venue in the world. On a typical race day, there can be 400,000 people on the grounds for “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
Roger Penske will have to settle for 135,000 this May 30, the 105th running of the race, and that's still a whole lot better than last year when he held the first ever Indy 500 without any spectators. State and local health officials said 40% attendance and Penske and the folks at IMS smiled and said thank you.
They had to be disappointed because they knew they could do more, even if 135,000 spectators will be the largest sporting event in the world since the start of the pandemic. The counterargument is that Penske, owner of the speedway only since January 2020, could have handled a larger crowd based on the size of the facility and the prep work done to build a safe event.

European Super League fallout sends a message that play...

weekly newspaper.
In simple terms, 12 major football clubs were willing to sacrifice decades of tradition and support to entrench their financial superiority in the world of football.
There is no debate – the traditional sporting principles of fair play, participation and enjoyment have long been trampled by the pursuit of financial dominance in the game.
On the same point, it should come as no surprise that the first significant cricket event to be staged during Covid-19 was the Indian Premier League (IPL) in November 2020. This event effectively replaced the International Cricket Council World T20 event scheduled for that time.
Given that the IPL brand value was $6.7-billion in 2019, it has become the most “important” cricket event on the calendar.
