A monthly subscription to HBO Max costs $15, which is roughly the same price as a single movie ticket in major cities.

Konghas been releasing a torrent of marketing materials in preparation for the giant monster battle that threatens to swallow the world in its wake, and a new poster unleashes the intensity of this upcoming brawl that was created exclusively for its IMAX release. Though the movie will more than likely be most watched on the streaming service of HBO Max, thanks of course to the coronavirus pandemic, the film is still slated to be released into theaters on the same day, with a run in IMAX theaters to boot. Throughout the numerous trailers and television spots that we've seen so far of the next installment of Legendary Pictures' "Monster-Verse", it definitely seems as if Kong will be taking on the more heroic role in this giant kaiju war, with humanity seemingly needing to rely on the giant ape to stop a rampaging Godzilla. While fans haven't figured out what is currently up Godzilla's "craw" to make him lash out against mankind, many believe that the reasoning is somehow linked with his metallic doppelganger known as Mechagodzilla, who has yet to make an official appearance in any of the footage. With Kong and Godzilla set to have the biggest battle of either of their lives, will the world survive this clash of the titans?

Imax to Open Four Theaters in Shanghai With Broadway Group (EXCLUSIVE) Patrick Frater, provided by FacebookTwitterEmail Giant-screen cinema company Imax and Greater China exhibition company Broadway have struck a deal to build four additional Imax theaters in mainland China’s biggest city Shanghai. The agreement means that Imax is on course to have close to 1,000 venues in operation in mainland China. All four downtown Shanghai sites will adopt top-end laser technology. They include One East, a flagship mixed use property owned and operated by Brookfield Properties that is set to open later in 2021. More from Variety Broadway, affiliated to Bill Kong’s Hong Kong-based Edko distribution and exhibition group, now operates 436 screens in 52 complexes in China. Broadway has eight Imax theaters in some of mainland China’s top markets, including Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Chongqing.

Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way. For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus (audiences can also rent it, at a price of $19.99, for a limited time via PVOD platforms). Disney tested a similar approach with “Mulan” late last summer, and now unveils its latest animated princess movie, “Raya and the Last Dragon” — though that label disguises the many ways in which this one advances the formula — both in theaters and via Disney Plus (where it can be rented for a premium surcharge).

With performances, plotting and visuals amped up to 11 as per usual, this hyperactive combination of Sherlock Holmes-type sleuthing and Three Stooges-style slapstick comedy offers plenty of zany fun, but the central murder-mystery contains so many convoluted diversions, digressions and detours it makes the whole enterprise play like a long stream-of-consciousness sketch with a glaringly hollow core.
