OAKLAND, Calif. - It s been a long and tragic year as the global pandemic wreaked havoc and stole lives and jobs around the globe.
In California, nearly 56,000 people have died of the virus and there have been more than 3.6 million positive cases. 
A year later, marked on Wednesday, there are some glimmers of hope.

Just under half of adults in the U.S. said in December they were very likely to get vaccinated, according to a new CDC study.
That s up from 39.4% of adults surveyed in September but still below the 70% to 85% scientists say is needed to suppress the virus.
That could potentially jeopardize U.S. vaccination efforts to control the pandemic, which has overwhelmed hospitals and taken more than 466,000 American lives in about a year.

California ordered 5,000 more body bags and has dozens of refrigerated trucks on standby as the state experiences its most intense COVID-19 surge to date, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday.
The state reported 32,326 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, amid historically high case numbers, the governor said. Its 14-day average positivity rate is 10.7% the highest it s been since the beginning of the pandemic. Two weeks ago, that rate was 6.9%. ....

Cedars-Sinai Receives Its First COVID-19 Vaccines Tuesday, Orange County Hospitals On Wednesday

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Cedars-Sinai Medical Center received its first supply of coronavirus vaccines on Tuesday, while hospitals in Orange County will begin receiving shipments on Wednesday.
The prominent nonprofit Los Angeles hospital reported Monday that the first healthcare workers to be vaccinated will be those working in intensive care units and its emergency departments. It’s unclear exactly how many doses it was receiving.
Cedars-Sinai will be storing the vaccine in ultra-cold freezers that keep temperatures below minus-80 degrees Celsius. Pharmacists are overseeing the handling of the doses. ....
