As syndicated columnist Megan McArdle noted July 23 (“Carbon tariffs are not a real response to climate change,” Page A11),  “Global warming is a genuine cost of emitting carbon … .” And lately, that’s a cost we’ve all been feeling. While Maine hasn’t experienced the incredible heat of the West Coast or the extreme flooding of Europe, our environment is still changing.
I grew up in the Lake Region school district, and I don’t remember summer temperatures of 90 degrees during my childhood. Back then, it also wasn’t a hardship not to have air conditioning in homes or cars.

Carter County committee hears from citizen climate group


ELIZABETHTON — Several committees of the Carter County Commission held meetings on Tuesday evening, hearing from numerous citizens and groups, but one of the groups that had not been heard from previously was the Northeast Tennessee Chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby.
Norma Morrison, a retired professor from Milligan University, spoke for the group and addressed the Health and Welfare Committee. The group asked for the Commission to pass a Carter County resolution on reducing pollution or endorsing House Bill 2307, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. She also asked the commissioners to encourage First District Rep. Diana Harshbarger to join the new Republican climate caucus.

Letter: Carbon pricing worth further consideration


Any new legislation toward reducing our carbon emissions and bringing in alternative energy to gas, oil and coal is always very good and so I’m very happy that this legislation is in effect and will hopefully begin to convert our infrastructure from fossil fuels to renewable energy. I do want to respond to a comment state Sen. Mike Barrett made in response to this legislation when he said, “It’s essentially the reverse of a carbon tax — a carrot instead of a stick. Carbon pricing penalizes energy sources that pollute. Social values pricing rewards energy sources that are clean.”

Expand effort to entire US (letter)


I read with interest the May 13 letter (“Regional solution to energy future”) in support of Pennsylvania’s entry into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a regional effort to cap and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity generation sector.
I suggest that a national price on carbon would vastly accelerate this effort by expanding the geography to the entire United States and expanding the carbon-cutting to the entire economy, including transportation.
In this regard, anyone who calls their Pennsylvania lawmakers in support of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative should also call their congressional representatives and ask them to sponsor House Resolution 2307, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. It has 52 sponsors in the U.S. House, including Pennsylvanians Matt Cartwright, Mary Kay Scanlon, Susan Wild and Dwight Evans.
