Two weeks since California reopened after 15 months of pandemic restrictions, COVID-19 infections are again on the rise, driven by a highly contagious variant of the coronavirus spreading globally, but remain manageable thanks to one of the highest state vaccination rates in the country.
The approaching Independence Day holiday has a much different feel in the Golden State than a year ago, when Gov. Gavin Newsom and health officials around the state pleaded in vain for fellow Californians to forgo July 4 parties with others outside their households. ....

Clog Report: Student struggles to cut bagel, almost leaves med school


Just minutes ago, Perry Carter, a student in the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program, reportedly considered dropping out of medical school while struggling to cut open a bagel.
Carter, who is currently studying to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, genuinely contemplated giving up on being a doctor after his complete and abject failure to bisect a sesame bagel this morning.
“You know what, maybe I’m not cut out for this surgery thing after all,” Carter, who graduated with honors and is among the top 10% of his class, said.
“I’ve been deeply interested in understanding the functions of the human body and using the knowledge to save lives directly,” Carter said with the mangled remains of his breakfast in his hands. “But as soon as my knife touched that bagel, I knew that I was never meant to be a surgeon.” ....

Months after former president Donald Trump lost his bid to reelection, five UC Berkeley professors addressed the implications and impacts of the Trump presidency during a virtual Berkeley Conversations event Friday.
Named “Trumpism and its Discontents,” the conversation followed the five speakers’ involvement in writing a book of the same name. They discussed why Trumpism gained massive traction among Americans and how it has affected the United States. ....
