NEW YORK
(NYT NEWS SERVICE)
.- Angel Pereda, 49, of Mexico, was taken into custody in New York and charged with wire fraud after prosecutors accused him of trying to sell artworks that he falsely claimed had been created by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced on Friday. Prosecutors said that on at least one occasion, Pereda created and sent new fake provenances to an intermediary in New York claiming that a painting was by Basquiat, in the hopes that it could be sold for millions of dollars. Basquiat’s 1982 work “Untitled” sold for $110.5 million at auction in 2017. William F. Sweeney Jr., an assistant director at the FBI, said in a statement, “Mr. Pereda conned art buyers, hoping his victims wouldn’t see the difference between real art and a forgery.” Pereda did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. ... More

The Recall Sawant campaign is pretty damn close to getting enough signatures to potentally get onto the ballot this fall: The campaign needs 10,739 signatures—and has collected 9,000 of them, putting them way ahead of schedule, reports Capitol Hill Seattle Blog. Though an email blast to supporters says the signatures are needed by August 1, the recall campaign actually has until October 19 to get them in. If successful in gathering the necessary signatures, it's still "not clear when the vote would be able to appear on the ballot," says CHS Blog.

Stowe welcome signs get a facelift

Stowe is giving a $40,000 welcome to people coming to town.
The town selectboard Monday approved spending money from its capital reserve fund to replace the aging welcome signs on Route 100 on both sides of town, near its border with Waterbury to the south and Morristown to the north. It’s estimated to cost $20,000 per sign.
According to the Stowe Area Association, which, up until Monday, owned and maintained the signs, the current signs are in poor condition. Work includes removing the existing signs, installing concrete foundations and steel posts and LED lights to illuminate them.
Town Manager Charles Safford said the money in the unallocated capital fund comes from whatever is left over from the town’s local option tax after the $350,000 annual payment toward the Stowe Arena’s 20-year bond and $212,000 yearly toward payments on a $3.2 million bond used to remove the overhead utility lines in the village, a project completed last year.
