The appellants in Loving v. Virginia were Richard Perry Loving and his wife, Mildred Delores Jeter Loving. Born on October 29, 1933, in Central Point, Caroline County, Richard Loving was a white man who worked as a construction worker. Mildred Loving, born on July 22, 1939, also in Central Point, was part African American and part Indian. (Later in her life she identified only as Indian.) After traveling to Washington, D.C., to obtain a legal marriage on June 2, 1958, they returned to Virginia, where mixed-race unions were against the law. They lived downstairs in the Central Point home of Mildred Loving’s parents. On July 11, the commonwealth’s attorney for Caroline County, Bernard Mahon, obtained warrants for the couple’s arrest. After attempting to apprehend them several times during the day, Sheriff Garnett Brooks found the Lovings at home in the early morning hours a few days later. A flag with a prominent expletive displayed across from Orchard Mesas Middle School prompted questions from residents about whether that was allowed within the city of Grand Junction. Shaver said the city does not have an ordinance prohibiting certain words from being displayed on flags or signs within the city. He said, in a statement, that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 2015 case that content, based regulation of signage is impermissible. ....

Continued improvements of the key COVID-19 metrics in North Carolina has Gov. Roy Cooper confident that the state will be prepared to open vaccinations to all adult residents by May 1. Thatâs the date President Joe Biden has urged all governors to aim for regarding vaccination appointments â with the caveat that demand will continue to exceed supply for several more weeks. Cooper said his decisions to accelerate the timeline have been based on provider feedback and expected supply of the Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. âI know that everyone was excited to hear the presidentâs (May 1 appointment) challenge,â Cooper said. âNorth Carolina will be ready to meet this challenge thanks to our vaccine teamâs planning, increased supply we expect to receive, and the hard work of providers.â ....
