News of the Week: Tiger Tales, Typewriter Sales, and TV Dinners Get Fancy

Post Connection to That Tiger-on-the-Loose Story
You may have heard about the tiger that was on the loose in Houston, Texas. The nine-month-old named India was finally found last week, and it was announced that she would be going to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas, where she will have a half acre of land all to herself.
But it was the name of the ranch that made me raise an eyebrow. Cleveland Amory? The Cleveland Amory who used to write a column for
TV Guide that I read religiously? Yup, the same Cleveland Amory. In addition to writing that column plus work for ....

What’s in a Name?
I don’t see a lot of new babies being named Robert these days. I used to have such a popular name. What happened?
The Social Security Administration is out with the list of the most popular baby names for 2020, and it’s pretty much the same list it was last time. The top male name is Liam and the top female name is Olivia. Other names in the top ten include Noah, Oliver, James, Emma, Ava, and Mia.
At that link you can see how the most popular names have changed over the years and even check lists by decade and by state. It’s interesting to see how names that were popular in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s names like David and Steven and Mary and Patricia barely register in an era of Elijahs and Harpers. William and Elizabeth are still pretty popular though. ....

News of the Week: Spring Thoughts, New Books, and Cookies from Out of the Sky

What would George Washington look like if he was a politician today? Well, like this.
It was only two weeks ago but I’ve already forgotten who won at the Academy Awards.
If there’s one thing I hope doesn’t come back after the pandemic it’s ball kids at tennis tournaments having to handle the gross towels the players use. This has always been odd to me and there’s no reason to go back to doing it.
Two minutes after typing that
Love Story line above I saw Ryan O’Neil on an episode of
Leave It to Beaver and I swear I didn’t plan it that way. ....

News of the Week: Movie Theater Comebacks, Going Meatless, and Levar Burton Wins a Round of Jeopardy!

The last movie I saw in a theater was
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It was the day after Christmas, 2019, and we didn’t know what was about to happen just three months later.
Not that I go to the movies that often, though I did plan to see the James Bond film
No Time to Die when it was originally scheduled to open last spring (it’s currently scheduled for October). But even though I’m not what you would call a regular movie-goer, I still feel a sadness that so many movie theater chains and small theaters have closed over the past 12 months, either temporarily or permanently, including the Cinerama in Hollywood. And since the pandemic started, people have been asking, will we actually want to go to a crowded movie theater again? ....

Fly, Cicadas, Fly
I was reminded this week of why I dislike the warmer months of the year so much (in addition to the fact that they’re warmer). I found a big spider on my kitchen counter. He was just sitting there, not even bothered by my presence, as if he were waiting for me to make something to eat so he could crawl on it.
But I’ll take that over swarms of flying insects. I saw all those “killer bees” movies when I was a kid.
2021 marks the year that the cicadas come back. Like bell bottom jeans and other things we don’t really need to see again, they return every once in a while to remind us, “Hey, we’re still a thing.” They come in 17-year cycles, and this is our lucky year (especially the months of May and June), so go out and see them before they vanish again until 2038. ....
