The last decade has seen historic political upheavals across the Middle East and North Africa: a tsunami of popular uprisings that have brought down several dictators and led to momentous transformations in political consciousness, if not always to democratic outcomes. But the last decade has also seen a concomitant counter-revolutionary roll-back across the region: authoritarian regimes, entrenched elites, ruling classes, deep states, and reactionary forces have marshalled considerable resources to torpedo these movements from below.[1]

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday submitted his application to run for re-election next month, in a presidential vote decried by Western governments and political opponents as a sham.
The scheduled May 26 polls will be the second since Syria’s war broke out in 2011, the first elections taking place in 2014. The United States and the European Union have called for a political solution in the long-running conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and forced millions to leave the country before elections are held.
“The proposed Syrian presidential election this year will neither be free nor fair,” a US State Department spokesperson told Al Jazeera. “In this environment, we do not assess this call for elections to be credible.”

BEIRUT, (Reuters) - Lebanon's Hezbollah has made preparations for an all-out collapse of the fracturing state, issuing ration cards for food, importing medicine and readying storage for fuel from its patron Iran, three sources familiar with the plans told Reuters.
The moves, responding to a grave economic crisis, would mark an expansion of services provided by the armed movement to its large Sh'ite support base, with a network that already boasts charities, a construction firm and a pension system.

A Reuters report said that the Lebanese Hezbollah is making preparations in anticipation of an imminent collapse of Lebanon, and has issued ration cards for food, imported medicines, and prepared fuel stores under Iranian auspices.

These steps come in the face of the serious economic crisis in Lebanon and the efforts of Hezbollah to expand its political influence within the country, and represent an expansion of the services provided by the party to its incubator from the Shiite community.
The recent steps highlight the growing fear of the collapse of the Lebanese state, as the authority will no longer be able to continue importing food or fuel, according to the report.
