Brexit divorce has been a nasty process — Scotland should take note

We’ve witnessed the long tailbacks of trucks at the Channel ports.
We’ve seen the resulting shellfish hold-ups and food shortages and the empty supermarket shelves. We’ve had the sausage wars with Northern Ireland and we’re facing demands from the EU for an increased divorce bill.
I don’t recall any of this painted on the side of a big red bus during the referendum campaign! Brussels now says that the UK owes it £40.8 billion, almost £2 billion more than we agreed. The UK claims that the negotiated divorce settlement was between £35bn and £39bn. It looks like our Brexit divorce is going to cost even more than Jeff Bezos’s payment to his ex-wife MacKenzie Bezos, following their explosive split.

The British Government has decided to increase the ceiling of its nuclear arsenal for the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union, as part of its strategic review of security, defence and foreign policy published on 16 March.
The UK will raise the ceiling on its stockpile of nuclear warheads from 180 to 260, an increase of about 45 percent, according to the document, which will be presented in Parliament by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
The decision ends a policy of gradual nuclear disarmament that has been ongoing for about 30 years, although it is unusual to publicly reveal the exact number of warheads or missiles.

LONDON — Britain is to substantially increase its stockpile of nuclear warheads in response to a deteriorating security environment, the government said in a long-awaited review of defense, security and foreign policy released March 16.
The move would see Britain increase the inventory to no more than 260 warheads, reversing a decision made a decade ago to cut the maximum from 225 to 180 by the mid-2020s.
Depending on exactly how many warheads the country intends to acquire, it could see the strategic weapons count increase by more than 40 percent.

US Navy Puts Iran on Notice in the Persian Gulf

Share This:
On December 21, 2020, the Guided Missile Submarine USS Georgia transited the Straights of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf accompanied by the Guided Missile Cruisers USS Philippine Sea and Port Royal. It is likely that at least one, possibly two, submerged attack submarines also transited the straights.
This is a significant force increase for the Navy in the region. It comes as three aircraft carriers, the USS Nimitz, USS Theodore Roosevelt, and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower are also deployed in the Pacific and Indian oceans.
The Georgia transiting on the surface of the straits sends a clear message to Iran.
