The UK will raise the ceiling on its stockpile of nuclear warheads from 180 to 260, an increase of about 45 percent, according to the document, which will be presented in Parliament by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. The decision ends a policy of gradual nuclear disarmament that has been ongoing for about 30 years, although it is unusual to publicly reveal the exact number of warheads or missiles.

The move would see Britain increase the inventory to no more than 260 warheads, reversing a decision made a decade ago to cut the maximum from 225 to 180 by the mid-2020s. Depending on exactly how many warheads the country intends to acquire, it could see the strategic weapons count increase by more than 40 percent.
