State high school tournaments return this spring after 15-month absence Welcome back old friend Wicked Local The last time we saw this old friend was on March 11, 2020, a mere 15 months ago. For myself, I was at the TD Garden covering the Division 2 state semifinal game between the Beverly boys’ basketball team and Whitman-Hanson. The Whitman-Hanson Panthers won that game, and were supposed to go on to Worcester’s DCU Center for the state championship game, but it never took place, because the world was shutting down from the coronavirus. We were told we needed at least two weeks to flatten the curve. But that turned into the entire spring high school sports season being canceled, and things didn’t really get back to somewhat normal times in most leagues until October, when the fall season began, albeit late, and without football and volleyball on the sports calendar. They didn’t begin until late February in something called the Fall 2 season. There was also no postseason. When teams played their final high school regular season game, there was no more. To the victor went the Northeastern Conference title, Middlesex League crown and when the Greater Boston League finally got going in January its squads were also shooting naturally for first place with state championship dreams put on hold.
Dom Nicastro Special to Wicked Local If it’s going to end anywhere for the Masconomet Regional High School baseball team (13-6), it may as well be here at Fraser Field on this early-summer night with St. Mary’s of Lynn as the opponent. That was the matchup Monday night, June 28: Masconomet vs. St. Mary’s for the Division 2 North championship with the winner advancing to the state championship game. St. Mary’s won, 2-0, ending Masconomet’s season after three postseason victories. Why not the Chieftains and Spartans in the state semifinals? They’ve been the class of the North Shore when it comes to this division: St. Mary’s won the 2019 Division 2 state title; Masconomet lost in the 2018 Division 2 North finals; St. Mary’s won the Division 3 state title in 2015; Masconomet won the Division 2 state title in 2014; Masconomet won the Division 2 North title in 2013 and lost in EMass finals; and St. Mary’s lost in the Division 3 North finals in 2013.
Hudson County View An artist’s rendering of the Western Edge project in Hoboken. By John Heinis/Hudson County View ” … I am glad to have received a commitment from Pegasus Partners to reduce the permitted height of their proposed buildings to 145 feet, thus ensuring that there will be no structures built above the height of the Palisades,” Bhalla said in a statement, noting that stakeholders have been involved in conversations for weeks. “I believe this is a reasonable compromise that reflects the quality of life and feedback of residents in neighboring municipalities, while also allowing for what we anticipate will be appropriate community givebacks for Hoboken.”
