How Calder transfixed Albert Einstein and Sartre – The Forward

As a teenager I would often mistake Alexander Calder’s work for that of Joan Miró and sometimes even Picasso. Bold, playful and abstract, the sculpture of these three art giants appeared interchangeable. Visits to Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona and Musée Picasso in Paris only seemed to confirm Calder’s European influences, even though the darker elements at play in their work seemed absent from his own. Being introduced to the wire lion tamers and acrobats in his “Cirque Calder” several years ago in the lobby of New York City’s Whitney Museum, at that time in Marcel Breuer’s brutalist edifice, reinforced that European connection. It also reminded me of another: Calder’s enormous, red “Flamingo” in front of Mies Van der Rhoe’s Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago.

Hauser & Wirth's Senior Director on Japanese Artist Takesada Matsutani

Share
Takesada Matsutani is one of the most relevant voices of Japan’s post-war unique atheistic and artistic expression. A member of the Gutai Group, one of the first radical artistic groups that emerged in the country in the early 1950s as a response to the reactionary social and cultural context of the period, Matsutani remains one of the most important Japanese artists still working today.
Thanks to a combination of different techniques, media and artistic forms, his works continue to demonstrate the spirit and essence of Gutai. To celebrate Matsutani’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, we spoke to Hauser & Wirth’s Senior Director Fiona Römer about the artists’ legacy and ground-breaking works.

Down to Earth: UAE gardeners to gather at Jameel Arts Centre event

SHARE
In the midst of the global pandemic, home gardening has been having a moment. On Saturday, December 12, seasoned and novice green thumbs in the UAE will get a chance to come together for community event Down to Earth at Dubai’s Jameel Arts Centre.
Taking place outdoors in Jameel Arts Centre’s gardens and Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park
, the event will include gardening workshops for children and adults, expert talks on sustainability and ecology and a green bazaar with items from 16 local businesses.
“We’re no strangers to the green space,” says Lana Shamma, head of programming at the centre, referring to its numerous garden spaces and park, as well as its Artist’s Garden commissions programme. “We wanted to broaden our programme a little bit. For us, it’s really important to bring those threads together in a way that brings public programming, education and something outdoors, to bring people to get together safely.”
