Protecting the ocean delivers a comprehensive solution for climate, fishing and biodiversity

London, UK (17 March 2021) A new study published in the prestigious peer-reviewed scientific journal
Nature today offers a combined solution to several of humanity s most pressing challenges. It is the most comprehensive assessment to date of where strict ocean protection can contribute to a more abundant supply of healthy seafood and provide a cheap, natural solution to address climate change in addition to protecting embattled species and habitats.
An international team of 26 authors identified
specific areas that, if protected, would safeguard over 80% of the habitats for endangered marine species, and increase fishing catches by more than eight million metric tons. The study is also the first to quantify the potential release of carbon dioxide into the ocean from trawling, a widespread fishing practice and finds that ....

TikTok, Tencent bite a hole in Apple's ad privacy plans

CAID, for China Anonymization ID, is currently being tested by the state-backed China Advertising Association.
It lets these companies continue to track iPhone users and show them targeted ads without the users consent.
Ticking clock: Chinese companies like ByteDance – the people behind TikTok – are looking for loopholes.
Apple will be introducing an update to iOS14 in the next several weeks that will allow users to opt out from being tracked, and preventing apps from tracking users if they do.
When the update arrives, users will have the nifty ability to choose which of their apps can access their Apple Identifier for Advertisers (or IDFA). Apple calls this App Tracking Transparency (ATT). ....

SAN FRANCISCO (March 16, 2021) - Over the course of Earth s history, several mass extinction events have destroyed ecosystems, including one that famously wiped out the dinosaurs. But none were as devastating as The Great Dying, which took place 252 million years ago during the end of the Permian period. A new study, published today in
Proceedings of the Royal Society B, shows in detail how life recovered in comparison to two smaller extinction events. The international study team composed of researchers from the China University of Geosciences, the California Academy of Sciences, the University of Bristol, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed for the first time that the end-Permian mass ....

Cisco drops out of MWC21 citing virus concerns

Cisco has joined the growing exodus of big vendors from this year s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, citing concern about the coronavirus pandemic in a statement provided directly to Light Reading.
It is the latest in a string of Tier 1 equipment vendors that have decided to abandon the physical stalls they previously booked and participate in the trade show online.
Postponed to June from its usual slot in late February, MWC21 was aiming for between 40,000 and 50,000 visitors, down from the usual figure of more than 100,000, before the spate of withdrawals.
MWC normally attracts more than 100,000 visitors.
Ericsson and Nokia, Europe s largest suppliers of mobile network equipment and two of the show s biggest exhibitors in normal years, confirmed their non-attendance last week, while Sony and InterDigital have also said they will not be travelling. ....

Losing rivers

 E-Mail
Water is an ephemeral thing. It can emerge from an isolated spring, as if by magic, to birth a babbling brook. It can also course through a mighty river, seeping into the soil until all that remains downstream is a shady arroyo, the nearby trees offering the only hint of where the water has gone.
The interplay between surface water and groundwater is often overlooked by those who use this vital resource due to the difficulty of studying it. Assistant professors Scott Jasechko and Debra Perrone, of UC Santa Barbara, and their colleagues leveraged their enormous database of groundwater measurements to investigate the interaction between these related resources. Their results, published in ....
