TALLAHASSEE Just a day after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida filed a constitutional challenge Saturday to a measure that would limit contributions to political committees backing ballot initiatives.
The ACLU argued in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Tallahassee that the bill (SB 1890) “burdens and chills” free speech and association protected under the First Amendment.
The bill, which is part of years of efforts by lawmakers to clamp down on ballot initiatives, would place a $3,000 cap on contributions to political committees trying to put proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot. It was among 15 bills that DeSantis signed Friday and is scheduled to take effect July 1. ....

Governor DeSantis Monday made moves to strike down the few remaining coronavirus restrictions enacted by Florida counties and municipalities, and again touted Florida s record on the pandemic. But data on the state s health and economy released this week suggests the sunshine state s recovery is lagging behind the pack.
The approach here is Florida leading the way, again, because I think there s some states going a different direction, Gov. DeSantis proclaimed Monday as he signed a law banning  vaccine passports, and announced executive orders tearing down any locally passed coronavirus restrictions. ....

Sunburn — The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics — 5.6.21
Let’s start the morning with some great news about two really good people:
Aly is a vice president of Accounts with On3PR, while
Omar is deputy chief of staff to Speaker
Chris Sprowls.

@NickConfessore: The fact that this private corporate administrative decision is being covered as something akin to a Supreme Court ruling — rightly so, I think — is the best illustration I can imagine of the sheer power Facebook has achieved over the public square
—
@BostonJoan: Imagine spending millions to offload blame only to have it returned like a bill lost in the mail, which is now overdue. ....

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis speaks during a press conference at the Okeechobee Steakhouse on December 15, 2020 in West Palm Beach, Florida. DeSantis talked about the importance of keeping restaurants open during the pandemic to help employees earn a living.
Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday signed into law numerous election rules changes that advocates say will make Florida elections more secure but which critics charge are really aimed at giving Republicans an edge in next year s midterm elections.
The governor, who is up for re-election in 2022, signed the measure live during a Fox News Channel interview from a West Palm Beach hotel after speaking at an event hosted by Club 45 USA, which is a former President Trump fan club. ....
