SANTA FE A prominent state senator who supports abortion rights said he was denied Communion by the Catholic bishop in Las Cruces over the weekend “based on my political office.”
Joseph Cervantes, a Las Cruces Democrat and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he has participated in his parish church and the Diocese of Las Cruces including serving as its attorney at times for 50 years, 20 of which have come while he’s served as an elected official. ....

It is tough to go even a week without seeing another report about pharmaceutical industry profiteering, and it’s time for New Mexicans to fight back. In the latest outrage, the New York Times reports the drug manufacturer Biogen will charge $56,000 a year for its new Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm.
Drug prices have little to do with the cost of research and development and the need to deliver affordable treatment to patients and much more to do with company revenue targets and profits. Biogen’s stock soared nearly 40% on news of the $56,000 price tag. Prescription drug companies are the only businesses in the health care industry whose rates are not regulated. It’s time to hold them to the same standard as all other health care providers. ....

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Friday a $7.4 billion general fund spending plan for the coming fiscal year that boosts state funding for public education, early childhood services and more while using her veto pen to assert sole authority over $1.6 billion in new federal pandemic relief funding.
General fund spending will increase by 5% during the fiscal year that starts July 1, with more than one-third of the increase directed toward education.
The governor vetoed the Legislature s recommendations for spending more than $1 billion in federal relief on initiatives that avoid future payroll tax increases on businesses, underwrite college tuition for in-state students, backfill lost income at state museums and more. ....
