The reaction of the Left last week to the death of Rush Limbaugh was a shocking demonstration of the incivility of current American political discourse.
Everyone remotely familiar with the American political scene is aware of what a powerhouse and pioneer Rush Limbaugh was. Anyone who knew him knows how personally gracious he was, modest and lacking in bombast and vitriol, even when discussing political figures with whom he differed sharply. He was, uniquely, no more impolite about political opponents privately than he was publicly.
Rush Limbaugh was a man from modest socioeconomic origins in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and both his talk-radio format and his blend of popular songs and other entertainment with current events was ingenious and witty. His success, which gave him as many as 25 million listeners every weekday, was entirely the product of his own imagination applied to his observations of listener habits and market demographics.

WHEN will we see his like again? Hopefully, not very soon and preferably never again. Rush Limbaugh is dead, my eyes are bone dry and the florists is closed due to lockdown.
This week the death of Limbaugh, the American talk-radio star, has drawn attention to the noisy cult of right-wing radio in America and marked the death of a pioneer and a thoroughly detestable personality. When it comes to modern media there is always a space for bigots, racists, and coded hate-speech.
Limbaugh was only known by reputation in the UK, where higher standards of regulation determine what radio and television shows are deemed acceptable. But his spectacular success in America, relentlessly targeting liberals, feminists, and the environmental movement, made him the most popular radio talk-show in the USA. There are lessons in his popularity for our own media.

Yesterday, broadcasting and conservative legend Rush Limbaugh died. Rush was someone that very few people were agnostic about. He evoked strong emotions on the part of everyone who listened to his broadcast (view our Rush Limbaugh coverage here and LIVE CHAT: Remembering Rush Limbaugh – Replay Available). I would go so far as to say that not only did Rush save AM radio from extinction, and he performed the same service for conservatism. It is difficult to see how conservatism would have survived as anything more than an elite circle-jerk after Clinton’s victory in 1992 without Rush carrying the fight to the enemy, day-in-day-out (and I don’t use the term “enemy’ casually) despite all the right people arrayed against him.
