Moving Streaming Production to the Cloud

The first thing to think about when considering a move to cloud production as an alternative to traditional, centralized, on-prem production workflows is, why the cloud? It's because it has specific advantages for certain applications. Whenever you're thinking about the cloud, you need to be thinking about how it will benefit you and your productions.

Bitmovin Raises $25 Million in Series C Financing

Bitmovin Raises $25 Million in Series C Financing
Bitmovin, a leading provider of video infrastructure for global digital media companies, today announced it has raised $25 million in Series C financing. The company will leverage this investment to drive the continued expansion of its product innovation and technology leadership in the streaming space. Bitmovin's Series C round was led by Swisscom Ventures with participation from Climb Ventures, and existing investors: Atomico, Highland Europe and Constantia New Business. The announcement brings Bitmovin’s total funding to $68 million.
"The online video streaming market has grown exponentially—at least 10x—since we started Bitmovin in 2013," said Stefan Lederer, CEO and founder at Bitmovin. "More consumers than ever prefer to watch content on any device and at any time rather than in linear programming. This trend is further fueled by advances in connectivity and consumer electronics, along with innovation in streaming technologies. We’re proud to take a leading role in helping transform the streaming industry by enabling new services around the globe."

The Keys to Launching Premium Quality, Profitable VOD Services in 2021

The Keys to Launching Premium Quality, Profitable VOD Services in 2021
Global VOD usage is massive. According to a recent 2020 THEME Report from the Motion Picture Association (MPA), subscriptions to online video services in 2020 surpassed one billion for the first time – reaching 1.1 billion globally – and this number is set to continue rising. In addition, the global VOD service market is expected to reach a valuation of around $183 billion by 2031.
Given the explosive growth track of VOD and today’s super-competitive landscape, it’s more  important than ever for content owners, service providers, operators and broadcasters to understand the key elements required to launch a profitable VOD service. Cloud-based video streaming platforms offer significant benefits over on-premises hardware, the depths of which will be explored in this article.

Why Streaming and VOD Providers are Moving to the Cloud

Tim Siglin: This slide shows our data on moving infrastructure to the cloud. We asked it in two separate questions: Essentially, if you're thinking about moving to the cloud or have moved to the cloud, what's the timeframe for live streaming, and what's the timeframe for on-demand? As you can see, we have a fairly significant number of people who say they've already moved, and then we have another group of people who say they are planning to move. Let me speak to that one briefly. Again, this is raw analysis. What we find in this slide, in the initial analysis is there are particular groups, whether they're not-for-profits who have commented that they're too small, or if they're government organizations who feel like their content is for internal use, as opposed to external use. So there are reasons that companies have chosen not to move to the cloud, but interestingly, the reasons aren't things like cost or flexibility. Rob, what's your take on what we're seeing with people who have moved to the cloud or are looking to move to the cloud at a later date?

Cloud Native Production: The Next Level of Carbon Reduction

Cloud Native Production: The Next Level of Carbon Reduction
Are broadcasters and major content producers going far enough, fast enough, to reduce their impact on climate change? A new report "Video Shouldn’t Cost The Earth" suggests not.
While many media organizations are starting to use the cloud for editing and post-production workflows—in part because of its merits to sustainability—they can go further by using fully cloud-native solutions.
That’s the conclusion of a new report from browser-based editing system developer Blackbird. In particular, the report highlights the limitations of hybrid solutions which are not designed to work natively in the cloud. Hybrid is the reports terms for technology which remains on-prem even if the applications are accessed remotely.

How to Maintain Production Control in Cloud-Based Production

Steve Nathans-Kelly: On the production side, which is obviously something that's changed almost as dramatically as the audience experience for live events, as production moves out of the studio and into remote locations, how do you maintain visibility and control over remote production and cloud-based workflows?
Eric Bolten: We certainly saw a lot of that as we went into 2020 in the pandemic, and I would say that, live production and live control were always slated to virtualized, but it was going to take a lot longer. Then that had to happen overnight. You saw some emergency things--people trying to use Zoom in a variety of fashions. But now we've seen the media and entertainment business in a very steady and now accelerated virtualization mode. You use different data rates like do take in very large streams in chunks, and sometimes it's in strange protocols like NDI, and the idea that you can bring that to the cloud, the groups can be disparate. So you're going to have a producer, a director, a graphics operator, and we're working on how you do the switching in the cloud, but we've been watching that happen pretty successfully and being able to bring out four, five, or six feeds of a given venue. We do work with the NHL and they're able to bring out 4K feeds that you can see and pan and scan on. You can see end to end. That gives it to a number of delivery partners that can now go to cloud Meet Me rooms and acquire this content.
