Major Fannie Griffin McClendon never thought too much about being part of the only Black female United States army group to serve in Europe during World War II. Neither did those who served with her in the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. The soldiers had a job to do.
The women are credited with solving a serious U.S. Army mail crisis during the war. Upon their return, they were seen as models for generations of Black women who would join the military.

Recognizing the women of the Six Triple Eight - The Highland County Press

Recognizing the women of the Six Triple Eight
Sen. John Boozman
R-Arkansas
February is Black History Month – a time to reflect on the influence of African Americans in our history and celebrate their achievements and contributions to the fabric of our nation. We honor the sacrifices of such brave men and women who persevered through countless challenges and we celebrate these champions of equality for all Americans. One such trailblazer, Anna Mae Wilson Robertson, was a member of the historic 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion.
Robertson was one of 16 women from Arkansas to serve in the “Six Triple Eight,” the first and only all-female, all-black battalion to be deployed overseas during World War II. The unit performed essential and meaningful duties during the conflict.

6888th battalion of women included Portsmouth's Doris Moore

After Portsmouth native Doris Moore returned home in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in hand, she wanted to do something to help her country. America was embroiled in the Second World War at the time, a literal battle between good and evil.
Moore was a woman, and she was Black. Her opportunity to make a significant contribution to the war effort was limited not only by her gender but by her race. This opportunity ultimately arrived with the formation of the 6888th Central Postal Delivery Battalion, an all-Black detachment of the Women’s Army Corps.
In order to achieve success on the battlefield, America’s fighting men needed more than proper training and equipment; more than an effective military strategy to guide them. They had to be reminded at times just why they were fighting so far from home.
